I went with Good Knowledge. I can set it up from start to finish and troubleshoot. I don't use autoset up, I pull out my sound level meter and my closest calibration DVD, but I don't consider myself an expert yet.

I've had no problems getting a normal home theater operational and calibrated using AVIA, an SPL meter, and a test tone CD. But I just don't think I am at that plateau of expert. No enough experience, yet!

I chose Good:
Expert states that I'd be able to calibrate it all manually.. I can't. I can set up my system and cables and get everything working properly minus the calibration, though.

I'll go with good as well. I understand the concepts of what is powered and controlled/influenced by other units. BUT the technical aspects are confusing in crossovers, calibration and the like. I admire the folks on this web site that are experts ( at least to me ) in this area. I recently bought an SVS sub ( Damn it is big!) largely due to the input of these folk. I auto calibrated it ( Yamaha RV-x2700 ( x-mas gift... I LOVE MY WIFE!!) but it was lacking. I researced the site and changed the crossover and the speaker setting and am loving life.

True and recent  example

Good Knowledge

99% of the time I can get everything hooked up and functioning (possibly with a little trial and error).

Other than simply tweaking things to make them sound the best as far as I can tell, I've never jumped in to real calibration. That's something I'd certainly like to learn.

Based on the criteria I said expert. I not only set up my system, but pretty regularly wind up setting up friends systems as well. Word gets out when a guy is geeky enough to spend his time tweeking a buddies system!

I chose good. I can definitely hook up all my equipment and calibrate it pretty well. Of course, I wish I had the time and the equipment to tinker with to become an expert.

I'm really a newbie at any sort of advanced home theater set-up. I just bought a 60" Sony SXRD, but am still using the 1998 Kenwood HTIB that I bought at Circuit City for $500. I've always been able to hook up receivers, speakers, etc., but only at a level that gets sound out of everything. Until I started reading this forum, I just assumed that was the primary goal...oops! :)

Well, my wife....

....says that I think I'm an expert in everything!

I wanted to choose "Good", but I CAN calibrate a system.

So if everyone wants to call me an expert, who am I to argue??? :D

My knowledge is limited (BASIC)

I voted Basic knowledge. While I have no problem wiring the equipments, I am quite doubtful calibrating. I rely more on how it sounds to ear than a meter. I have no clues on the speaker graphs and cannot plot one for my HT.
I just bought a spl meter and avia disc to calibrate my sub woofer, ended up with basic settings (80hz xover, speaker set to small, level -6 on receiver and gain 12oclock on receiver) than trusting the meter.

It will be awesome to learn about calibration and I think it's an art.
Thanks

I feel pretty confident in setting up my system, but it is always difficult to determine the optimum combination of equipment in my room for a given budget. The Axiom home theater wizard is great for this.

I prefer the old fashion way of setting up a system - a tape measure and my ears. I'm also big on room eq. As far as video goes, I use a disc, then tweak to my liking.

Um... "good knowledge"?

Can get the wife's "wow" response but haven't yet started sticking power supplies in sand boxes....

Picked good

I find setting up the systems pretty easy. I find wiring the connections straightforward and I will take the time to adjust the volume and crossovers for each channel by ear. Though I admit I don't bust out the SPL meter to get really accurate readings.

At some point I will probably get a cheap SPL meter, I have never configured the video display.

I've been purchasing the higher end(what i could afford at the time) AV equipment for over 20 years and based on the questions i would fall under the good knowledge catagory but with the ever changing technology i sometimes feel that i'm just a novice. Case in point would be the Axiom speaker line that I have read lots of good things about but have never been able to actually hear what they sound like hence I could never give a valid opinion and would consider myself a novice since my last speaker purchase(Energy speakers)was 7 years ago.
Thanks for allowing me to particpate in this contest.

Good knwoledge. Always learn from experimentation, from forum (other people knowledge and experience) and other A/V home entertainment resources. Able to setup A/V Home Entertainment from scratch to finish including setting the speakers' position, loudness, subwoofer phase and crossovers, wiring, HDTV setting, and PC media center.
