So D&M has upgraded the preamp/vol control ICs since 2016, that's 3 years after that hometheaterhifi.com article was published and appeared to have standardized them across the whole line, I wonder if Yamaha has done the same. From what I could find out so far, they had not done so to their 2016 models, but might have done something after, not really sure. On the DAC chip side, D&M has finally upgraded to the AKM chips that have comparable specs to the ESS Sabre chips Yamaha has standardized on in their recent models.
Thanks to standardization, one can now feel free to buy the entry models if the feature set and power output is adequate for the job, without worrying too much about poorer sound quality.
