Your Great coverage continues. Thank you for that.

As we go into the final day, don't forget to get some info on Cerwin Vega and JL Audio. I'm interested to see what direction Cerwin Vega is going, and interested in what JL Audio will bring into the home audio front.

We ran into Cerwin Vega coming out of CEDIA (they didn't have a booth this year due to some unexpected staff changes). We only chatted a bit about some car audio products. They have the Stroker 2 coming up which should be able to handle 4000 watts continuous. In fact they said that they don't really know what they can handle since they didn't have a bigger amplifier to test it with. :)

I would love to see coverage on any HDMI capable receivers cheaper than Denon's $6000 beast. Also, any news on rear projection microdisplay 1080p displays being announced. Thanks!
There are a couple LCoS and of course Sony's SXRD Grand WEGA- KDS70XBR100 Rear Projection TV (see picture.) We're continuing to post all this week so check back and I'll get more info and real photos up for you.

Hawke,

I'm still confused! I have a Denon 3805 and am considering purchasing a Denon 3910. Are you saying that if I purchase the 3910 it will support SACD through the Denon Link 3rd edition? Perhaps I should rephrase that.

I know that SACD is supported on the AVR 3805 and the DVR-3910, but will it work if I were to buy the DVR-3910 tomorrow? Or will I still have to wait for some approval to override the established spec?
It will not work through Link, analog only. When the agreement is reached, you'll get a software update for digtial. Go ahead and do it anyway, sounds great, enjoy it.

pga,

I think I am going to purchase the Integra DPC 8.5 changer instead. I hear it's a great player and it's $600.00 less then the 3910.

Pardon me, but you still may be confused. The 3910 will play SACD right now, but not in digital (Link 3rd Edition). The anolog sounds great, you may not even notice the difference. Price wise, have a look at the 2910 first, it lists for under $700.00 and offers almost as much as the 3910, in fact the differences are minimal.

pga,

I know that SACD will play through the analog connections. I was wanting to do away with that "rats nest" approach. The reason I am considering the Integra is because I have gotten spoiled with my current DVD changer. I like being able to load it up with both music CDs/DVDs and movies.

Unfortunately Denon doesn't offer a changer that will play both SACD/DVD Audio CDs.

Ahhh, CEDIA EXPO 2004 is over now. If you didn't communicate your desires, you're too late.

Denon Link 3rd

Regarding Denon 3rd Link. There is still an ongoing issue and the crux of the matter is that the SACD spec states that SACD can only be transmitted over IEEE 1394. Well, while all parties (Universal, Sony, etc) are fine with the idea of Denon Link 3rd Edition passing SACD, their are some legal issues (and tie ups) in getting the necessary approval to essentially "violate" a spec.

As such, the hangup is on the DVD player side - not the receivers (the newer models already fully support SACD over Denon Link 3rd). Jeff Talmadge from Denon is preparing a documetn for us that will address this in more detail - but for now SACD will need to go over analogue (or IEEE 1394 if you have a new AVR-5805 or other receiver with support for IEEE 1394).
Did Jeff tell you when he would provide the info? From what I can read on various BBs, A LOT of people are very confused and frustrated about this specific issue.

My guess is it will never happen, unfortunately, if SACD is dropped by Sony.

Jeff believes the approvals will be inplace when the 3910 starts shipping. I asked Jeff to do a little write up on all the issues of getting this provisioning. Its not a fault on their part as from a technical standpoint, the players are ready!

Here are some pics of the new players along with a detailed comparision chart.

Here are some more pics of the Denon AVR-5805 A/V Receiver.

Denon Link 3 is NOT activated yet on the 3910. I've had mine since Thursday and it switches over to analog for SACD. Not too big a deal. I pass DD, DTS, CD, HDCD, DVDv, and DVDa over the Denon Link. The Denon 3805 automatically switches to external in when SACD is picked up and no digital feed is sensed form the Denon Link. It works very smoothly and sounds great! Oh yeah...the picture is awesome! I thought the 2900 was great, but this puppy is amazing.

Hopefully the SACD thing is cleared up soon. Hopefully it will just be a CDr software update too. It seem pretty easy. It would just show up as DL3 in the audio setup menu.

THX Certified Home Theater Program

Just read the article about the new THX Certified Home Theater Program. The article doesn't go into cost. Any idea how much to certify a home theater? Not including the room construction, equipment, and calibrating services... just the cost of getting the certification and other services provided by THX.

thanks!

This has always been the problem from day 1. So essentially nothing has changed in almost 2 years, and noting that, my guess is still that it will never happen. I hope it does, but I really cannot see how Denon in good conscience can advertise something(SACD over DL3) by putting a disclaimer about awaiting approval which has now gone through two generations of players and still no approval. Don't get me wrong, I really like Denon products(3805-5900) but this is beginning to be ridiculous and I think Denon should drop the idea of advertising this function, and make an announcment that an upgrade is available to do it when it can. The confusion among prospective buyers is unreal, it's one of the most talked about things whenever Denon is discussed. You can't escape the fact that people looking to buy the players are led to believe that SACD-DL3 is going to happen anyday now, and that is simply not the case. IMO, it really goes to the heart of Denon's credibility and truth in advertising.

My 0.02 anyway,

Jim

Yes, there are many rumours. With dual disc especially, I hear Sony is hardly promoting SACD. This website has a few articles on the subject, you'll just have to look.

No, it's not a fault of Denon's as far a technical standpoint, never was, but it certainly is Denon's fault for designing and then advertising the function in their players when they had not even received approval to have the function. I can see Denon advertising the ability when Denon Link was first announced, maybe they thought the approval was going to be forthcoming very soon, but I cannot accept that 2yrs later Denon is still using this to help sell DVD players. Very misleading on Denon's part.
