Canadians Causing Trouble Again.

GO-NAD!

GO-NAD!

I posted that teh AQI in the Milwaukee area was 350 early in this thread- it was >600 Thursday and >400 yesterday- the latter is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes, but I'm not sure of the required time. Driving with the RZ Mask I linked made a huge difference and the odor was almost completely gone.

WRT "unmanaged", the point is that logging and clearcutting aren't done, mainly because it's not financially practical to harvest and just leaving the trees would just be stupid because it's still fuel.

But, politicians, right? Say things just to say things- SOMEONE will jump on it and create a bullcrap program to advance their ideas.
The boreal forest in Canada has an area of over 1 million square miles, encompassing more than half the total land space. About 0.2% of it is harvested each year and, by law, is to be immediately replanted. One could leave the coast of Labrador and walk all the way to Alaska and never come across a town, a road or a single human being. The vast majority is inaccessible by road - it's by foot or by air. That's it.

There is no "managing" such land. Not by Canada and not by the US. Nobody is going to crisscross that territory with roads with the sole goal (hope) of managing it. For one, it would cost an incalculable fortune and be a Quixotic exercise in futility anyway.

Wildfire is the natural way that the boreal forest regenerates itself. The primary reason for the increase in the number, size and intensity of these wildfires is climate change. Canada is warming at twice the rate of the world average. It has created multiple years of severe drought conditions and the changing weather patterns have lead to more lightning strikes. And, since lightning doesn't need a road, the largest and most destructive fires tend to be in very remote areas, due to their inaccessibility. Lightning causes half of all wildfires, but is responsible for over 90% of area burned.

If these politicians want to see a reduction in wildfire damage and smoke, we have to stop emitting greenhouse gasses. Then, we will have to wait several generations to see the effects. Of course, politicians don't care about what happens beyond the next election cycle, never mind during the next century.

I didn't mean 'manage all of it' and posted that it's not practical. I understand that fires cause regeneration wherever they occur and new growth happens very quickly.

Did you think I was defending politicians?

HOA owner complains water is running into his yard into garage; HOA needs to fix. Law states otherwise, homeowner needs to build barrier. :D

Oh, not at all. I have no argument with your post.
