I did, but 50" is good for me. It's a nice, comfortable viewing angle from both my couch and my chair. Had I asked Doug to "go Doug" on Amazon, I might have had a 54" right now, though.

You should easily be able to add a 100" drop-down screen in that space in front of the LCD.

Yup Adam, you need either another sub for symmetry and/or a pull down screen so you can hide it.

Congratulations on the new TV and for joining the crowd. I can tell you do things on your own time frame (as I do I). Peer pressure? Bring it on, I will buy no TV until it's time.

One note of caution though: everyone says you will eventually get used to it and think you should go bigger. I did all the research on size vs distance and resolution and all that and got a 52" LCD (I've had it for about a year). It gets smaller every day. Pretty soon I fear it will look like a little spec on the front wall... I know the TV speakers work too because I've had all my equipment disconnected for over 7 months now as I start and stop the remodeling projects I wanted done. How's that for 'suffering'?

I can deal with lack of surround sound for a little while but having to go to the laundromat while my perfectly good washer and dryer sit idle in the garage is a little tougher to take.

Hey, everyone. Some quick questions and advice sought.

I'm looking at ordering the Oppo DV-980H player today from Amazon for delivery tomorrow. I'll need to order in about 4.5 hours to get it tomorrow, and I'll do it from work.

My questions:

1. Outside of blu-ray, is there any reason to consider paying $330 more for the BDP-83?
2. Does anyone know if I can play DVD files (e.g. .VOB) over the USB port?

1) I had the 980 and just went to the 83. The GUI is much better on the 83 and seems to handle downmixing better. I have to use the stereo analog and composite out for my whole house system. And it seemed with the 980 I had to go into the menu to downmix to 2 channel when using the analog out. I think the 83 you can have separate settings for the analog and hdmi. Then again maybe I did not know what I was doing with the 980.

2) When I spoke with Oppo about this they did not give that in the list of file types. I think it is AVI, WMA and a few others but not DVD files.

Just buy the 83. If you spend $169 now on the Oppo and then later $250 on a basic blue-ray you will be near the cost of the 83. The only reason I would see not doing the 83 is if you wanted the netflix stuff that the LG and others offer that you cannot do with the Oppo.

That is one of the biggest things holding me back. I do want the Netflix streaming.

Hi Adam, I haven't seen the PQ of the Netflix streaming.
Do you know if it's as good as watching the disk in your player at home, along with download rate, etc?
Along with that the 'downloadable movie library isn't as big as the disk library.
Just a thought, I don't know if it's all it cracked up to be, and would hate to see you compromise after getting such a nice TV.

Hey Rick,

I stream quite a few movies through my 360, and it all comes down to the speed of your internet connection and how stable it is.

Sometimes I get a picture that rivals the best HD channels, and other times it is so crappy it's worse than SD channels. But most of the time it falls somewhere in between. It is usually better than SD but it’s no 1080p, if that helps. For me it is totally worth it!

Rick - I agree with nibhaz. I've watched Netflix streaming on my new TV through my MacBook, and it looked good (once I manually set the bitrate).

Well, I didn't get the Oppo. Instead, I got the Panny DMP-BD60. Just $30 more, so I bit. It should be here tomorrow. I upgraded to blu-ray on my Netflix account, and hopefully will have two blu-rays to watch on Saturday. Right now, I'm thinking Transformers and Casino Royale.
