7.1 HT Room size

What would be the minimum room size to have a 7.1 HT setup or a 6.1 HT setup ?

There's not really a minimum size involved. I'd say it's more of a matter of logistics. Can you place the speakers correctly so as to maximize the spatial effects of these channels in your listening position?

i.e. my listening room is about 12' by 16' and I cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, place any more than the two rear surrounds and get any sort of decent effect. IOW, anything more than 5.1 would be a waste the way my room is laid out, and with walls, openings and such, my choices are limited.

Well, my room is almost as big as yours. It is 11x19 with 8' ceiling. I guess the 7.1 setup is out of the question ......

It ain't the size, it's the layout.

Picture where you could place the speakers. Remember, with 6 0r 7.1 you have speakers behind you.

Now picture where you can comfortably sit.

Is it logical and practical? If so, then it's doable.

First of all, let me start off by saying thanks MARKW for responding to my questions as I am a newbie. I will be sitting 10-11' feet away from my tv and the side speakers will be next to the listeners on stands or hung off the walls and the back speakers or speaker will be 8-9' back from the listeners. What do you think about this layout?

10 feet to the TV.

Surround speakers on the side walls.

8 feet to the rear speakers.



Sounds 6.1 or 7.1 to me.

sjdgpt, what I was trying to ask is, if the layout, meaning the distance between each set of speakers from front, middle and back would be ok for this size room.
