Is it good to mix brands of bookshelfs

In my experience it's impossible to overstate the necessity of voice matching the speakers, especially the front three. Perhaps there are brands and models that will serendipitously match another brand, but I haven't heard it. Frankly, even different lines by the same manufacturer are often...

    The 800lb gorilla vs a 10,000 gorilla

Obviously there's a financial risk to the labels. Only 1-3% of all records make money at all. There are thousands of CDs released each year that sell in the low hundreds! Of course, one Dipp Shiddy or Maria Carey disc covers the cost of dozens of them, if not hundreds. Still, that...

would this be a good start

The Corners aren't really bass traps, although they do (for reasons I don't quite grasp) seem to help with the bass. The main areas of improvement are midrange clarity (esp the vocal range) and treble smoothness.

would this be a good start

Wow, sweet lookin' HT setup! I have been meaning to try some GIK and RealTraps stuff sometime. Right now I have around a grand's worth of 8th Nerve treatments and am extremely pleased. I'd suggest trying either Adapt or Response Corners in conjuction with your traps.

The SheepStar is a Canuck- the legal drinking age is something like nine years old up there!:D

    The 800lb gorilla vs a 10,000 gorilla

Are you sure this is the case? I've purchased several CDs @ Wal-Mart that were a bit on the "racy" side and never come across an edited one. Maybe my tastes aren't as filthy as they were in my youth.:D

    The 800lb gorilla vs a 10,000 gorilla

I think you're laboring under a misconception- the CD you buy there is usually the same CD you'd get at BB. The only ones that are edited for content are labelled as such, and are uncommon. So far as I know, that is.

    The 800lb gorilla vs a 10,000 gorilla

Those "little guys" don't have the clout of Wal-Mart. The mere threat from them that they may stop selling music has the industry in a panic. No, Wal-Mart isn't necessarily the "good guy" here, but I think the Big Five are definately the Bad Guys. Anything that makes them squirm makes me...

Can I change native 2.35:1 format pictures to fit my 1.78:1 screen?

The best solution performance-wise is to go with the OAR and mask the unused portions of the screen. There are automatic screens that have motorized masks but they're very expensive. I've seen pics of several DIY masks that are cheap to make if you're handy.

    The 800lb gorilla vs a 10,000 gorilla

I have to say I take a perverse delight in the idea of Wal-Mart sticking it to Big Music. As much as people love to hate them, they're apply a lot of pressure on the industry to lower CD prices. WM has "hinted" in no uncertain terms that if the recoring companies won't lower prices on CDs...

Can I change native 2.35:1 format pictures to fit my 1.78:1 screen?

You can do it, but you shouldn't. Yes, you can probably set your display (depending on what you have) to crop it, but then you're losing part of the picture plus losing resolution. OAR is the way to go.

    Athena AS-P4000 Subwoofer Review!

I've watched that scene many times...never noticed any problems. Were my pair of Hsu TN-1220's supposed to get all worked up?:D Okay, I have notice one problem- a loud, pronounced KRAKKK sound from my ceiling! There's been a couple times I feared the tarpaper-shanti of a house I rent...

    Monitor Audio S10 for sale!!!!

You have 'em listed on Agon, too, right? The pics there look a lot better. Why don't you use ImageShack to host them (it's free), resize & link them here. Btw, they look very nice for the price you're asking. I can't stand that finish, unfortunately- it's just too light for my HT. If they...

    720P DLP for $999!

How long have you had it? I could say the same thing, as I've only had my H31 since August. Still I wouldn't take back the three months of superb performance nor all the movies I've watched since then! Sell the H31 to a friend or on Videogon- you should still get $400-$500 out of it. Then...

    Optoma HD70 Projector Review - $999 for 720p DLP!

Great review! I didn't really need any arm twisting as I've been tentatively planning to buy one, but your review has probably put me over the top. I absolutely love that they modelled the remote on the wonderful remote of the H31, and I'm delighted that they retained the "slow fade" feature...

I need help setting up my system?

A couple last notes: four speakers, one in each corner, might be good for party music, but it'll be a lousy way to set up your rig for serious listening. And if you want 200 watts per channel you'll probably need an amp. But that's an arbitrary number anyway. You can probably get buy very...

I need help setting up my system?

If it's complicated at all it's just because there's so much good stuff out there to choose from!:D Given the ubiquity of receivers and the relative rarity of integrated amps, I'd say a receiver is the way to go. There're many good models that would meet your needs for under $200 new (you do...

    720P DLP for $999!

I'm not sure. I've heard conflicting reports. Supposedly Optoma says 10 bit, but I've heard it's not so simple. Ultimately, I guess I'm not so concerned about what's under the hood so much as the performance. I'm anxious to see a few more reviews.

10/17/06: A Dark Day in American History

Anyone who thinks it's hyperbole should read the law themselves. I am not a republican nor a democrat. I find this one of the most chilling peices of legislation ever signed into law.

    Hitachi PJ-TX100 LCD Projector Review

I've never heard of the TX 200. Unless/until I move, the PJ will be mounted pretty close to where it is now, which is to say between about 12-14 feet from the front wall, essentially right above me. I prefer to stick with a screen size of about 80" or so. Most PJs will project an image of...
