Speaker Cones: What are the differences?

Ah, but my Sequerra monitors have a paper cone tweeter, and are excellent speakers. As others have said here, it's in the (whole) design. The materials in my Ohm Walsh speakers are not esoteric by any means, but the designers implemented these materials in such a way that the sonic results far...

The never ending pursuit of satisfaction

I'm pretty happy with my gear, although I am upgrading my amp and DVD player very soon. There is equipment out there that I can't afford and probably sounds better, but at the same time, I've heard enough rigs that are a lot more expensive than mine, and don't sound nearly as good. Some...

    Heard a live band today

No problem - off the top of my head, Tea for Two has some bass drum comping going throughout - I'll have to listen this weekend, to refresh my memory. I think the drummer is Sam Woodyard, and the bass drum has this really low fundamental pitch, with a funky sustain - sounds like calf heads on a...

One of the best sounding kik drums on record is from Duke Ellington - Live at Newport 1958 - just beautiful sounding...

    Heard a live band today

Thank you! Everything seems to be working together pretty nicely, but I'm definitely going to get a new integrated soon - I'd like a little more res, and a remote! I watch a lot of TV and movies, so I'd like to be able to change the volume easier. I was ready to go for a new Mac integrated...

    Heard a live band today

Hey David - I have a Pacific Valve modified Lite Audio DAC AM - very cheap... The improvement was so great, I think I'll eventually try a Benchmark or Lavry.

    Heard a live band today

When I was still in the demo period with my current speakers, I would record myself with bands and check those recordings between my old and new speakers as a sort of test. I've been pretty happy with my rig for the last few years now, and I can get a taste of that "real thing" when I hear my...

    Powered studio monitors

Powered monitors are great - a quick and easy system could be an Oppo DVD/CD player directly into the monitors. The Oppo has a variable output via the remote. It's digital, so you may lose a little bit when lowering the volume, but it'll sound pretty good.

Suggestions For Home Theatre-Two Channel Rig

I think he should stick to 2 Channel! The best for music, it actually sounds great for HT, and if he's a busy guy - 2 channel is basically plug and play. I was thinking of going with an Arcam DVD player, but for the price, I didn't want a machine that might be out-dated in a few years or...

How do connect laptop to receiver?

The DAC route is a great way to go. I'm running a Lite Audio DAC AM - modified by Pacific Valve - it's pretty cheap! The DAC is fed by my CD player, Airport Express and cable box. Most of my listening is from my laptop to the Airport - excellent sound!

Which gives the system it's particular sound, the pre amp or the amp?

fmw - I love Epos speakers! I remember going to a HT show, and the creek/epos room was one my favorites. I agree that the placebo effect has a lot to do with perception. But, it's not the only factor when switching out a component. Some magazines and designers do rely on blind testing...

    Sub $1K setup recommendations

Hey Fitz - Since you're near NYC, you could try doing what I did and drive over to Ohm Speakers in Brooklyn and try out a pair of MicroWalsh Talls. I picked up a pair a couple of years ago and never looked back! In this price range, they're the only floorstanders that can do what the monitors...

    Bi-amping vs Higher powered amp

I don't think bi-amping is going to improve things as much as a new amp. I was bi-amping with two Arcam amps and switched to a single McIntosh amp. The improvement that I heard from the Mac was much greater than the difference that I heard from adding the second Arcam.

Buying equipment these days: Difficult at best

I would recommend trying the Orbs. I've had great luck with direct purchases. My main system are Ohms, and bedroom system are the Orb Classic One. Customer service for both was great, nothing beats auditioning at home. I have the experience with my everyday work, to hear the exact some...
