Buying equipment these days: Difficult at best

I was able to buy "sight unseen" simply because both of the brands I bought (Denon and Boston) are ones with which I have had previous experience, so I trusted that their products would be high quality. I was not disappointed, but would not have taken the same chance with unfamiliar brands. (I...

What to watch First - Help!!

Almost worth it for the young Jane Fonda in that suit.:)

Your Reference Disc - Music Style

There are a lot of "copycat" bands out there trying to cash in on the success of CW, and all of them strike me that way. CW themselves seem entirely genuine, however. If this particular collective did not exist, the women in it would have to find some other route to stardom, as they are simply...

And then, of course, there is Amazon Women on the Moon. (A spoof rather than real SciFi. Hilarious. Especially "the man with no soul".)

Your Reference Disc - Music Style

I never claimed to be a hippie. I am the wrong generation for that. My older brother is a hippie. I grew up on '70s top 40, then punk and metal. Since then, my tastes have mellowed considerably, but remain eclectic in the extreme. Nobody who has actually heard Celtic Woman could say "ewww"...

I know it said that, but it still seems surprising. I would think that out of all those bands, somebody would have had to be under 20!

Which is better overall quality; Sherwood Newcastle or Harman Kardon?

When I bought my Denon pair (stereo receiver+DVD player), I actually considered a Sherwood pair instead for close to the same price. I decided on Denon because I am more familiar with them, and am quite pleased with the sound. I cannot, however, rule out the possibility that the Sherwoods might...

    How to biamp?

I have put the Carver up for sale here. If nobody buys it, I might try it as a power amp just to see if I hear any difference (it would be easy to hook up.)

Your Reference Disc - Music Style

Any fan of Enya owes it to himself to listen to Celtic Woman. Similar in style (though a bit more traditional), and jaw-droppingly amazing voices. They also do a cover of Orinoco Flow that I prefer to the original.

What to watch First - Help!!

I haven't seen that since it first came out. I seem to recall not liking it, but I can't remember why. Maybe it is worth trying again.

Cool. Glad he has remained active in music, even though he never "made it big". A lot of interesting collaborations on that list. Says he was 20 at Woodstock, which doesn't seem all that young (I bet a lot of the musicians at Woodstock were younger than that.)

Too much talking and analysis, not enough actual performance. Appreciate the thought, though. (I tried a couple of Rush concert DVDs and was disappointed by the sound quality, even though the performances themselves were great.)

    2-channel advice - Parasound?

My typical volume setting is -21 or -22 dB. This is roughly equivalent to the 9:00 position on a dial. Speaker sensitivity is 93 dB/watt/meter, nominal impedance is 8 Ohms, and the listening distance is about 8' (in a 10' X 20' room, open to a 20' sq. total area.) I don't have an SPL meter.

    How to biamp?

I did think of that. When I switched from the Carver to the Denon, however, the sound seemed much cleaner and more detailed. I don't know how much of that was the preamp section and how much was the power amp section. I fear that using the Carver this way could come at a cost in clarity. I am...

    How to biamp?

Even if I were interested in crossovers, I would not have the technical knowledge to use one effectively (bypassing the speaker's own filters and such.) I am also not a DIYer, and would not want to risk opening the speakers and changing the internal wiring in any event. I have pretty much given...

I knew what you meant. It would be interesting to find out his name. It might turn out to be somebody we have all heard of.

If it were Neil, I would.:) I admit it would be fatiguing, though (for him and the audience both!) I would buy a solo CD (drums/percussion only, no singing) from him.

I had not heard about that incident. The kid in question is, of course, no longer a kid. Does anyone know who he is? Is he known only for that, or did he join a band and become famous?

    New SongTower speakers

Definitive Technology BP series towers are a transmission line design. The quantity and quality of bass that they put out is utterly incredible for the size of the drivers and cabinets.
