Most people don't know how to design speakers, which is why DIYers generally build kits. Living in an apartment, that is not an option for me, but I have read that the results are generally excellent.

I don't get modding speakers. If you are going to go to that much effort and expense, why not build your own speakers? It seems like that would give better results.

I have heard several makes/models of speaker with and without spikes. There is no audible difference.

I was a high school teacher for a couple of years. So much of my time was spent attempting (unsuccessfully) to maintain classroom discipline that I barely had any time left for actual teaching. If you want to save money on the receiver, choose speakers that are rated at 8 Ohms and at least 89dB. That way, you won't need a lot of power.

Chains of those were used as decoration when I was in middle school. By high school, they were gone.
