    curious question

I said this earlier. Fix the room first. If the room is fixed there is much, much less need for any kind of equalization.:D

    dbx Dynamic Range Expanders

What CD's are you talking about. Unless they are classical music the chances are damn near 100% that they have been compressed within an inch of their life.

Interconnects: Are we just hearing things?

If I have been informed correctly, Sirius uses a lossy compression scheme. If so there is no way to recover data that has already been discarded. In other words the best DAC in the world won't help because the signal is already f**ked.:D

    Smoked

There was a product sold on TV that did just what you suggest. It was called the "Hot Dogger" if my memory is correct.:D

Interconnects: Are we just hearing things?

Although my opinion about wires differs from the norm here (I think there are differences) it is impossible for (properly working) speaker wires or interconnects to have any effect on separation.

    Death Penalty and Executions.

I agree with Rock&Roll Ninja about the application of the death penalty. Executions should be public and high school students should be required to attend. As for the abortion issue. When I can get pregnant then I'll decide. Until then it's the womans choice. It's none of my business...

Is there a clear winner between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD yet?

A double sided double layer DVD can hold more than 17GB.:D

    a good defense against bose-ites

I invite them over to hear my system. After they hear 4 full range ESL's and 3 sub woofers they realize they've been had by Bose's marketing. They then say "those speakers are so big, I don't have room for that kind of thing". I then demo my bedroom system for them. It cost less than $2K and...

    Adcom GFA-555 or Denon POA-2200

The Adcom will drive just about any load in existence. It will probably last forever and if you don't like it you can easily sell it and get your money back. I bet you can't say that about the Denon. I own 2 Adcom power amps which are used in my main system and an Adcom preamp/tuner used in my...

Nee subwoofer advice....1 or 2, that is the question.

Get 2 12" subs. You can place them asymetrically and reduce or cancel out some of the room nodes. The larger cones work better in larger rooms.

    Imaging ?

When I say the sweet spot for my ESL's is rather small that refers to critical listening. This type of listening is almost always for music only. The kind of imaging I'm referring to is the ability to hear real musicians playing in a large room that begins at the plane of my speakers and extends...

NHT - ST4 vs. Infinity Beta 50s --- NEED HELP!!

You have not mentioned anything about how they sound to you. Have you bothered listening to the speakers you are considering? How can anyone buy speakers without listening to them first? It's kind of like researching and buying a car without taking a test drive. Would you do that?

One way to determine what the BEST speaker is!

NAD, Adcom, Hafler and Bryston are a few of the products that are 20 year amps. If you want gear like that ebay is the wrong place to look. www.audiogon.com is the place to buy 20 year amps or any really good gear. Bryston gear has a twenty year guaranty. Audio research services and upgrades...

    Imaging ?

The set back tweeters are supposed to time align the tweeter with the woofer and midrange. The idea being that if the signal reaches each voice coil at the same time they should be physically aligned so there is no difference (time wise) when the signal gets to your ear. Theil speakers are...

    Imaging ?

Room treatment and proper placement of speakers will enhance whatever imaging the speakers are capable of giving. Almost any speaker will give reasonably decent imaging when placed properly. A room that has been treated will give even better imaging with those same speakers and positions.

    Turntable woes

A new cartridge would definitely make a difference. The suspension components in them dry with age.

Enter to Win: Rives Audio Test CD 2!

Give them an SPL meter. I recently saw them for $29 at www.acousticsounds.com . I would also offer my help in using the meter to make the system sound as good as I could help make it.

    curious question

My preamp has no tone controls. I haven't used an equalizer in 15 years. Make the room sound right and you won't need an equalizer. Room treatment always works better than eq'ing.:D

    New subwoofer project

Check the Pass Labs DIY site for a very interesting subwoofer. Transmission line subwoofers may be better than anything else!:D http://www.passdiy.com/

    music and wine

Aging alcohol in glass or ceramic has no effect. There is nothing in the container to leach into the liquor. Aged liquors are aged in wooden barrels that have been burned or treated in some way.:D
