When autorip started up I was very disappointed that it wasn't offered with vinyl, glad to see they were working on it.
Its a good thing now. All new albums I've purchased..new meaning artist with a new album (not a re-release) have offered a download coupon for a 320MPS mp3 or FLAC version of the album. Thats been my experience. :)

Today(April 20th) Is Record Store Day 2013

by Andrew Marinaccio

This Saturday (4/21) marks the 5th annual Record Store Day, and with it comes another chance to procure your favorite band's most exclusive (or oddest) musical releases yet. There will also once again be lots of in-shop events. No matter where you are located (in the U.S., UK, Germany or Belgium) (like Chicago maybe?), you should be able to find a still-open record store near you that will be selling the good schwag and possibly throwing a party too. As we've been, we'll continue to highlight some of the NYC stores, along with what you might find in them.Aside from selling fresh rarities, NYC's Other Music is celebrating with a live lineup of DJs featuring Four Tet, Black Dice, The Men (who appear on a Sacred Bones RSD comp), Ex Cops, and Wild Nothing. Other Music will exclusively sell Ex Cops's debut 7", "I Am the Lion, You Are the Lamb," which is relasing on their Other music label. Other Music is set to open to the public at 11 a.m. Saturday morning (which gives you time to hit other record stores who open even earlier, first).Kim's Video & Music looks to attract the early birds with an 8 a.m.opening and live and/or DJ sets by MUSH1, X-ray Eyeballs, Prince Rama, and more. In addition to the gig there will be discount offers, "over 150" record store day exclusives, pizza and beer. Maybe you'll find a copy of the, a day late for 4/20, Lee "Scratch" Perry Blackboard Jungle Dub Limited Edition Box...
The West Village's Generation Records has a show of their own planned, with The Paul Collins Beat, Supertouch, Night Birds, and Joyce Manor performing, as well as DJ sets by Tom Scharpling, Three Chord Monte, Zachary Lipez, and Mikey Post. They will also be selling a variant of Supertouch's Lost My Way EP, which will feature shop-exclusive cover art. Generation Records is pegged on opening at 10 a.m. this Saturday.Williamsburg shop Sound Fix will host Mates of State for a gig and meet-and-greet on Saturday night. The band's 2009 covers album, Crushes, will be released for the first time on vinyl as a Record Store Day exclusive. Sound Fix opens at 10:30 a.m.Amid touring, Portugal. The Man, who have a RSD 7" of their own, are playing an in-store set this Saturday at Fords, New Jersey's Vintage Vinyl. The shop's also opening early at 8 a.m., and their stock's boasting reiusses of Graceland and Raw Power, as well as Iggy and the Stooges' LP picture disc of their ATP 2010 performance of the seminal album.Long Island's Looney Tunes Records is featuring a trio of free acts by Grace Read, The Lumineers, and JuiceheaD and Osaka Popstar, who are bringing their collaborative 7" "Waiting Room" exclusively to the shop. The show will start at 1 that afternoon, but shoppers can begin at 9 a.m. if they're "VIP Members" (to inquire what that means, check here). Doors will open to the general public at 10 a.m.Local giant J&R Music World will house acts starting at noon, including Everest, Yann Tiersen, Mike Doughty, and guitarist Doyle Dykes. The insitution will also demonstrate some tech to attendees, showcasing the features of the new audio software suite Roland R-MIX. Miles Davis' (who has a special Record Store Day compilation, "Forever Miles," planned for release) nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., will also be making an appearance.Permanent Records in Brooklyn will host in-stores by Memoryhouse and Mattison.Cake Shop says "the CAPESHOK RECORD MART back for one day only!" and are hosting a performance by the Hairs at 3pm.Check Record Store Day's site or call your local record store to find more happenings.

Nice to see you are getting good use from that turntable. How do you like the sound of the rig, now you have had a chance to settle in with it?

I truly am enjoying it TLS. The speakers sound so real and not colored like alot of speakers made today. The only thing I want to add Is a sub and I'm sure it will shine even more. I'm getting a crackling sound when I turn up or down the vol knob on the amp any remedy for it? I'm thinking one of those electronic sprays?

Well you have put it to good use.

You can try some electronic contact cleaner sprayed into the volume control, but they are well made closed up controls made in England. After a time the carbon track wears out.I have never had any luck with tuner cleaner on those controls.

That component is NLA. However I bought the last ones from Quad for about $70 each. I'm not sure how many I have left, I'm sure no more than 2 and may be only one.

I have tried building them from mono pots and a switch, but these Far Eastern made pots have such wide tolerances results are unsatisfactory. If it get really bad you will have to send the unit back and I will have to replace the volume control.

They all do that. Just wait a few moments after turn on for the caps to stabilize. There is nothing wrong with it.

Would love a Stones album since I don't have any anymore. Wonder how high the prices will go? EDIT 24-30 bucks on amazon. I guess that's cheap.

Has anyone ordered vinyl from Music Direct? I ordered 12 albums over the Memorial Day weekend when they had a 10% off sale. Some of the albums were back ordered, but when the package arrived it was a lot bigger than I had expected. I open it up and there are 12 albums that I didn't order so I thought I got the wrong package, but under those 12 were the 8 I did order, and then under that was a SACD.

Not that I'm complaining, but I was just wondering if what happened was typical? It seemed they just had a certain size box and they were going to fill it no matter what. The extra albums ran the gamut, opera, ballet, Greatful Dead, etc.

When people actually can see what the technology of older generations can achieve they are astonished more often than not. A lot of people when seeing breaker ignition for the first time think it must be pretty useless. Actually a well set up breaker ignition starts and engine quicker and more reliably than the best computerized solid state ignition. My breaker ignitions are set to make my old engines start hair trigger, almost always starting with the first piston to come to compression. All solid state ignitions have to crank the engine for at least a a couple of revolutions and often more. The engine has to have a good cranking speed to. Breaker ignition will start an engine even when the battery is very flat and barely has the power to turn the engine at all. Solid state computer ignition systems can't come close to matching that.
I was just reading through this thread for the first time, I think. The statement above about electronic ignitions is incorrect, the proof being the new auto start-stop technology becoming standard in so many new cars. The restarts are instantaneous, and if they weren't the feature would be unacceptable, and unsafe. Breaker point ignitions were eliminated because they wear and drift, and without frequent adjustment they increase emissions and fuel consumption. Breaker point ignitions also do poorly at high RPM (e.g. above 6000 RPM), but at the time the transition was being made (1970s) the RPM issue wasn't a hot discussion.

Personally, I think LP stereo records are a mechanical miracle of a class we seldom see anymore in consumer products, but as with breaker point ignitions I can't think of a single way that they are superior. Fun to use and fun to tweak to optimization? Yes. Do I miss them? No.

I personally don't buy new vinyl. However I spun a lot of vinyl on my downstairs system by the log fire this last long winter. It was very nostalgic. In my youth I used to listen to LPs, by a coal fire in the winter.

However, I do think streaming is coming of age, I find myself streaming more and more. I have particularly enjoyed my season ticket to the Berlin Philharmonic Digital concert Hall. These AV productions are the absolute state of the art of what Internet streaming can do.

This is a recent article in Gramophone: - "Has mp3 had its day." I certainly hope so.

This is a blog I wrote recently.

Things are on the move!

By reading the linked article, I would say vinyl is still very much enjoying the growth phase. Although it will remain a niche, I think the growth is well past the "fad" stage
