That's what happens when you let your fingers do the talking $$$$$$$$, I try to stay off the AH site for a few days a week, I just can't help buying something, and most of the time it's want, not need. You do need the 52's, especially now that you have a sub that will do them justice. In home trial free, no like, take back to BB.....
+1 to that. I got them for under $100 each. Very nice for the money.

You get your Level Three's yet?

Just got them as I type this, double boxed with their own cloth bags, solid as a rock and heavy, very attractive appearance and special detail to cosmetics, they included rubber washers to go on the pegs of the grill covers just in case they have a tendency to vibrate, that says a lot. If they sound as good as they look I'll be estatic. Will fire them up shortly, and post some impressions.
Cheers Jeff

I look forward to it. I'm going to the HTD office today to put the SP-FS52's up against the level two and three towers. Should be interesting.

I thought about ordering the level 2 towers, but the entire 5.0 Pioneer system was less than just the level 2 towers, plus I had a completely free trial period with the Pioneers.

Very nice, I was looking at that pre-amp combo myself, looks well designed and should be just what the 52's need, congrats on the purchase.
Cheers Jeff

Absolutely, may take a bit of a hit though, do you have the BS41's or BS21's? Without a doubt significant upgrade to the level 2's

Good move and congrats on the sub, I highly reco you use it on it's own first, I think you are going to be very pleasantly surprised, well not surprised, according to the specs and seemingly well designed enclosure you should expect excellent results. You may decide that the PIO sub will detract from the SQ of the JBL. Let us know what you think, this sub seems to be all over the ID market, never even see it prior to Jim's reco, good call brother.
Cheers Jeff
Well, I've had this setup for a little over a week and I am loving it. The sub sounds great with movies, but music isn't too shabby either. The wife gave me strange looks when I installed it... ie "the sub crawl" but she got over it when she heard it. When movies are on and the sub rumbles, she looks at me and laughs because I just have a stupid silly grin on my face. I know at some point in the future I will get the itch for something that goes lower but for now THHeeeere Great1! And thanks again for the helpful insights. Lately I've been looking at diy designs. No idea what I would be doing but some Paul Carmody designs look good. Any knowledge out there to compare his designs against the pioneers as they would be my reference now.

I will be too if I ever get the time. I've been to the office, but haven't had time to grab the speakers beforehand. I'll post my experience when I get the chance.

Greetings,

I read this whole thread, and want to thank everyone for their input. Also, Amazon has the towers for $86.99, center for $69.99, and bookshelves or $90.99. I just got them all for $335 with free shipping, and can't wait to get them set up in my new HT!

This is a fantastic price for those w/in driving distances but for me the round trip drive from Dayton to Cincy may cost more than shopping @ Amazon

Hi All,
I recently acquired a Marantz NR1603 receiver. The receiver specs are as follows:
-50 W (8 Ω, 20 Hz – 20 kHz with 0.08 % T.H.D.)
-80 W (6 Ω, 1 kHz with 10 % T.H.D.)
I am considering acquiring the Pioneer SP-PK52FS (S-HSAJ2 here in Canada) 5.1 speakers. However, according to Pioneer SP-PK52FS 5.1 Floorstanding Speaker System Review | Audioholics , the speakers are basically 6 ohm speakers. I am therefore concerned that these speakers may result in high T.H.D. when combined with this receiver, and therefore may not be a good selection in my case.
Can anybody comment?
If the Pioneer speakers are not a good choice for this receiver, what would be a better recommendation in the same price range?

Thank you for your advice
Dan
PS: I currently have a set of old Boston Acoustics A70 speakers connected for stereo output. Opinions regarding their sound quality for use as Left and Right in a 5.1 system: am I better off retiring them and getting all new speakers?

I don't see any problem driving the Pio's with the Marantz and using the A70s as surrounds until you upgrade to all Pio's. Or just go for the whole enchalada and get the Pioneer 5.0 setup. Then think about a decent sub to compliment the 52's, don't skimp there, the 52s deserve better.
Cheers Jeff

Like ahblaza posted below, skip the .1 and save for the best sub you can afford as the bass is the foundation that make theses speakers really shine.

The 1603 is one of the slimline receivers, designed as much for space constraints and looks as for sound, which is why the THD is high for 6 ohm loads.

Unless you can find sales on other brands, it is hard to find anything in the class of the Pioneers for the same price. I would recommend checking the return policy on the Pioneers just in case you do not like them driven by the 1603. The Boston's should be fine as rear surrounds, but the Pioneer bookshelves would give you the same look throughout the system, tough call there.

Current Boston speakers are voiced by some of the same people that design Marantz products so the Boston A series could be an option, although they are pricier than the Pioneers unless you can find a sale.
