Mark, I don't know if this off topic, I will ask anyway, I have a Jelco SA250ST tonearm in very good condition, purchased in 1986, to my knowledge the pivot bearing is in good shape, it has a damping well, I have been using the arm as is, would there be any benefit to adding a viscous oil to the well? Thanks my friend for your time.

Yes. Silicone is the correct fluid. You can buy a tube of SME fluid from Flat Earth Audio.

Another really cool vinyl website. Thsi one dwelves deep into the vinyl labels and companies that used to be around.

The RCA label page is nice, since it shows all the various labels side by side. Maybe I will send them photos of a few I have that they are missing (pink Island, Vertigo spaceship and swirl labels, Parlophone, Norgran, to name a few I didn't see). I've also got a lot of white label promos that would be a cool addition to this collection-I wonder if they would want photos of those as well?

vinyl sales tally of 2010

In recent years some headlines have cast an increase in sales for vinyl LPs — once considered a casualty of the CD era — as something like a beacon of hope for the struggling music industry. The reality isn't all that rosy. Though vinyl sales grew by 14% in 2010, according to Nielsen SoundScan, they still counted for less than one percent of the year's total album sales.

But vinyl has never really gone away. It's just meant different things to different generations. Today, for the most part, that means fans of indie rock. According to that Nielsen end-of-the-year report, here are the top ten vinyl albums of 2010, with sales figures in parentheses:

Abbey Road - The Beatles (35,000)
The Suburbs - Arcade Fire (18,800)
Brothers - The Black Keys (18,400)
Contra - Vampire Weekend (15,000)
Thriller - Michael Jackson (14,200)
High Violet - The National (13,600)
Teen Dream - Beach House (13,000)
Valleys of Neptune - Jimi Hendrix Experience (11,400)
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd (10,600)
XX - The XX (10,200)

I wonder how long this new generation of vinyl lovers will hangon to this medium?

My 27 YO son is a child of the digital age, but he is following in my footsteps on the vinyl front and has already developed the beginnings of a vinyl obsession like his old man. He's still afraid of my TT setup (his is much closer to entry level and cost "a bit" less), but he is spending more and more time trolling the racks of his local record stores for used (mainly 60s and 70s vintage) vinyl. The fact that these local stores still exist is in itself a testimonial to the staying power of vinyl-with the changes to places like eBay (not nearly as cost effective for hobbyists to buy and sell their stuff), these local stores have become the low cost place to get used vinyl, at least here in SoCal.
