What movies do you like that critics/everyone else hated?

I think I'm the only person who thinks that "The Phantom Menace" is the best of Star Wars prequels; in the whole series I think it's better than all but the Original SW and The Empire Strikes Back (which are both wayyyyy above and beyond all of the other movies).
Yes, you probably are.

I loved "Lady in the Water" and actually liked Battlefield Earth. Most people don't get scifi so that's why so many people bash it. Movies speak to different people. My favorite film is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. My parents can't watch it.
I thought Lady in the Water was good, and while we are on the subject of M.Night, critics and most everyone I talked to said The Happening was lousy, but I thought it was at least as good as Lady in the Water. It wasn't great, but it wasn't nearly as bad as many made it out to be. Battlefield Earth on the other hand was pure crap, and I am a huge Sci-fi fan. There is nothing to "get" about it, it was as if it were written by a 6yr old. CTHD is an excellent movie, but one has to understand and like Asian cinema.

p.s Battlefield Earth wasn't so bad at all, I don't know why all the bashing and hate :(
Yes it is that bad.

Are there movies you like that reviewers or all your friends say are bad? List them here, I'll start.
Waterworld: Made ~250 million at the box office but was also the most expensive ever made at the time. I think people considered this one bad just because it lost money.
To me it's the best example of a movie that most people love to hate and I really like. ;)

I also liked Paycheck with Ben Affleck. ;)

There is nothing good about ether Lady in the Water or The Happening with latter being complete POS.
If in Lady, Paul Giamatti was atleast trying and showing real acting talent (despite total garbage of scenario it has), Happening doesn't even have that.

I couldn't believe it's possible to make movie worse than Signs, but Night overdid himself and proudly brought us the Happening....

I liked Waterworld, in fact, I love that movie - it's mad max goes to sea. What's not to like? I know people tend to hate it but I'm wondering if they hate it because they think they have to? Or because it's "cool" to hate waterworld.

I will tell you that every M-Night movie is garbage garbage garbage. I can sum any of his movie's plots up for you right here:

Scene 1: Normal life in some time period. Let's watch people in everyday lives.
Scene 2: One person seems paranoid about something
Scene 3: That one person gets more people to feel that way
Scene 4: Something feels as though it is about to happen, but so far nothing
Scene 5: The tension is rising higher as something will definitly happen...
Scene 6: Something incredibly mundane happens, like killing interestellar beings with water (though there is water in the atmosphere) or the crazy guy is the monster, or nothing happens at all.
Scene 7: See scene 1.

Credits.

Only movie he ever did that was good: Sixth Sense, and it was probably only good because John Mcclane was in it. Forget Bruce willis.

From M.Night, I also liked Unbreakable, though it was clear his directing ability was already tapped out with Sixth Sense. Lady in the Water and Happening weren't terrible. The story was bad in Lady in the Water, but Giamatti kept it from being a turd. The story again was the real downfall of Happening, but I still didn't feel like I had wasted my time watching and it achieved at least a level of b-movie horror flick tension. M.Night's problem is he thinks he is a better director than he is. That's why the only two movies I own from him are Unbreakable and Sixth Sense.

Another one that most people felt was junk that I actually like (acting aside) was Cloverfield. It was an entertaining popcorn fodder horror/action flick and on that level only, it worked. Creature Feature :)

Cloverfield was great.

Also, Unbreakable was good UNTIL the end. I hated that. It was intriguing until you get to the end and the moron decides to wrap up the movie with... powerpoint slides?!?!!? Written explanations about the results? ARE YOU FREAGIN SERIOUS!??!

He could have left it open to speculation or ended it on a high note, but instead he resorted to spoon-feeding a cliched conclusion in text form. Terrible terrible terrible.

Sixth Sense was well-done and he ended it right.

Lady in the Water was a fascinating story to me. Blanket statements that a movie sucks are ridiculous. Everyone has different tastes. I think saying I didn't like the movie is sufficient enough. Very few movies are widely loved.

Watching M. Night's movies generally are like watching paint dry yet I really enjoy most of his stories. I think he still could have an excellent career as a screenwriter if he'd just give up directing.

Waterworld was doomed by having Kevin Costner in it. He singlehandedly ruins the movie for me.

I've always like Costner. He's not a great actor, but he does entertain me. Of course I started liking his movies in adolescence. And we all know every Costner film shows a woman. :D

When Costner does something right he really gets it right like with Dances With Wolves and Open Range. He has some stinkers though.

Dances With Wolves is by far his best movie.

The Postman and Waterworld are guilty pleasures. I'd not call them great films in any right. I'm sure Crowe will make a better Robin Hood, but I'd rather have Costner at my house for dinner. I don't like phones being thrown at me. ;)

I think the Unbreakable is actually Shyamalan's best movie overall...but yeah, it's amazing how 30 seconds of film can really leave a bad taste in your mouth, especially if it's at the en.. The original cut of the film didn't have any of the "powerpoint" crap, but apparently the studio or test audiences or whatever wanted to be spoon-fed an unambiguous ending.

Wonder Boys (Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey Jr, pre-Cruise Katie Holmes) is one of my favorites for a rainy day. Did reasonably well w/ critics, but an absolute box office bomb.

It seemed like a bomb, but I really liked Mindwarp, the Bruce Campbell movie he was in right before Army of Darkness. The first 1/2 hour or so is boring, really boring, but then they go underground and it's a damn gore-fest with creepy imagery. Really good early 90's horror IMO.

IMO, everything with Bruce Campbell was a flop, but I enjoy most of his movies.
