Are you an industry professional, or custom installer that has a passion for A/V and would like to write for us? If you have a solid tech background, ability to measure electronics and loudspeaker performance and correctly interpret those measurements, please send us a resume and example articles you're recently published at other A/V publications or tech journals.

I wish I had chosen a different field when I went to school, oh well.:)

I'm interested, but not sure what the process entails.

What equipment do we review? How do we get to the equipment?

Kind of sums up everything that is wrong w/ this hobby, doesn't it?

I think I would be a great reviewer yet I don't meet any of the requirements. :D

Neither do many reviewers of most of the A/V publications. :D

a good reviewer should be able to insert "chocolatey goodness" in his reviews.

You could atleast give yourself the title of Dr. Monkey in your column  . Heck you don't even need to see, hear or measure/ interpret any of the data of the product. All we ask for is a creative writing puff piece based on the manufacturers published photos of the product. Then if any consumers call into question your review, we will question their motives for being objective  .

On a serious note...

AH, thank you for continuing staying true to your moto and your quest for objectiveness. Pursuing the truth...indeed!

Gene, if you want a CAPABLE speaker reviewer, I offer my services in the spare time. Might be fun. If there is anyone that can actually do a better job than me in regards to loudspeaker analysis short of actually having NRC or Harman Labs do it for you...... let me know... :D

I don't have a professional background to meet the above qualification of providing a 'resume' listing these experiences. I'm just an 'amateur'. So my offer may be overlooked. :)

I desire only to provide summary and measurements, and detailed report of measured results and effects perceptually, from an objective POV. I can provide a 'subjective' caption separately, if required. But I must insist it is separate from the objective review. Much like Stereophile has the raw technical data in a shade box, and the subjective review in the white. However, I won't offer the rainbow of jargon they use, I must limit it to sensible statements. :)

If you are interested, I'll even build/use a localized anechoic chamber for the measurements, given allowance budget. Such a chamber using the materials I have access to should cost no more than about $2500.

Here is an example of image files representing objective analysis I performed for a commercial speaker. Full THD at distance, full off axis response characteristics, full range merged response, CSD, etc.

http://www.linaeum.com/productinfo/other/krk_rokit5/

At minimum, I would provide that amount of data, along with discussion of effects on auditory/perceptual system(s) of human subject(s).

In addition, full photographic detail of product and interior, and discussion of this as well.

I can also offer amplifier analysis, to an extensive level. However, an equipment budget to get proper gear for high power amplifier analysis would be required.

Well, everyone knows I have BRUTAL standards. So it stands to reason not many speakers will get 'two thumbs up' from me......

If people here want the highest possible quality reviews of ACTUAL performance of speaker systems, they should express this and thus suggest to Gene that I am the right choice. :)

I also have a listening room with a virtually unlimited level of acoustical treatments available in order to optimize for any type of speaker 'audition'.

I want to add the anechoic chamber in my house and will willingly do so to provide for the absolute highest quality measurement conditions and highest reliability of measurements. I can effect an anechoic chamber that is effective down to about 90-100Hz in my home using the materials/methods planned for this circumstance of events using a budget of approximately $2500. 100Hz on up is the critical band for anechoic analysis. Below this, a near field merged curve will be satisfactory. Gated MLS measuremetns are not highly reliable under 600Hz in a non anechoic room. This leads to low resolution energy decay analysis and low resolution frequency response analysis under 1000-1500Hz in mid or far field conditions and difficulty gauging true relative from bass to midrange, in the baffle step band, leaving a not so high confidence level. Refer to Stereophile's constant statements to the effect of not reliably analyzing upper bass response due to the problem analyzing mid or far field in a normal room. Also, anechoic chamber makes distortion analysis (THD) more reliable and easier to conduct.

I think you would be an excellent speaker reviewer. Just take care of Randy Bessinger before you go building an anechoic chamber. The guy is already like 63 years old and in light of his age, I am willing to postpone reading a WmAx speaker review. :)

Nothing is getting built or worked on until this horrid snow is out of the way down here. But measurements/analysis is not hindered.

If I did build the chamber, in any case, it would not be started until late summer/early fall. I have other things to do first: Randyb's speakers, then some heavy revisions to my current mains and most likely design work on another custom speaker system for a client(I am moving out of build work for other people; just concept/design/prototype analysis and having a trusted cabinet shop build actual final cabs to my schematics for customer).
