Star Trek - Blu-ray

When I watch a Star Trek movie I want to see cool spaceship battles. Nemesis had this in spades. Sure the whole B-4 plot line was stupid, but the battles are part of what make Wrath of Khan and Nemesis both good Trek movies in my opinion. The plot of this latest movie was assinine. Gimme a break, some Romulan dude comes back in time to change the entire Star Trek timeline?!?!? And the only real spaceship battle was in the beginning and even that one was kinda lame because you had music going over it instead of hearing the sound effects of the fight.

Sorry, but this movie was WEAK.
The essence of Star Trek isn't spaceship battles. Time travel is a major part of the Star Trek series and has been the basis of many plots. I'd agree the plot was kind of lame, but I felt like the movie was a trilogy intro more than a stand alone film.

Nemesis has so many issues I'm not even going there. I will give you that the battle scenes were fairly well done and the villain was an incredibly gifted actor. The ending and beginning was what really stunk in that film. It was better than insurrection though. I agree that we need a real story line next time. I imagine there will be one. Remember this was an odd movie. ;)

I think Abrams was trying to find a balance between creating a good sci-fi action movie and setting up a new franchise. The time travel/parallel universe thing seemed to me like a device to explain why the new Star Trek was different. I'll forgive it if the next movie is better.

Also, there's more to a sci-fi action movie than space battles, the skydiving scene and fight scene on the drill were pretty cool.

I agree completely. He was setting up a new era of the franchise, so they KNEW they would have to make it accessible to those new to it and still have enough nods to make the fans happy as well. In that respect, I think they did a good job.

Yep. A GREAT movie IMO. Watched the BD last night. I was quite impressed with the SQ. Good LFE and over all sound mixing. THe story was very good too. Better than I thought it would be. The reviews of this movie seem to be all over the place.

Got the Blu-Ray in from Amazon on thursday (previewed it then for sound/picture levels) and last night had a viewing party. I am more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek if I have to choose, but I did follow the TNG, DS9, Voyager and all the movies. I liked the story a lot, and as J.J. Abrahms explains on the extras disc, it's a Kirk-Spock story of how their relationship is formed along with that of the rest of the crew - everything else in the story is ancillary. This is the Star Trek movie I like most.

This Blu-Ray is awesome, better than what I experienced at the AMC 30 digital theater opening night. The raunchy brass section in the music scores (the brass of the James Bond theme sounds like smooth jazz in comparison), the phaser fight sequence (wow - love the dynamics going on here!), and the warp sequences (such tight punch and with a precise kick you can feel and hear... jaw dropping awesome!) really for the first time showed Dolby True HD was everybit as good as DTS HD Master Audio...I am relieved (I was concerned when the specs for the Blu-Ray came out and it was not DTS MA...).

Video is not as excellent as the audio, but still extremely good. Love how the movie is framed and shot, has a Star Trek visual feel to it while still being somewhat unique as its own movie. Lens flares work. Total audio-visual experience = most awesome Blu-Ray experience yet. Definately THE Dolby True HD reference Blu-Ray.

Everybody at the viewing party REALLY liked the experience (at least half were seeing it for the first time) and now they are wanting another movie excuse to come over again. I showed the downloaded 720P trailer of "Avatar" as a preview, and everyone was saying 'forget the theater release it straight to Blu-Ray so we can watch it here'... LOL

My parents will be coming over tonight (unless my youngest sister goes into labor and delivers on the due date tonight!) They haven't seen it yet, so come on sis', you can hold out for one more night! ;)

Just what you need, your sister delivering in the middle of the movie from all the excitement;):D

Watched it again on Sunday and I gotta admit I liked it a little more the second time around. The actors did a pretty good job at portraying the original cast, yet putting their own spin on the characters, especially Kirk and McCoy. Zachary Quinto has a great look for Spock, but he just seemed to be playing a slightly different version of Sylar. I still found all the lens flares hella annoying and how the hell does Scotty just warp on to the Enterprise and instantly become the chief engineer? Didn't they have somebody doing that job before Scotty got there?

Before I would have given it a C-, now I'll give it a C+

I think you are biased. Your chargers had just owned the Broncos. In your joy you are much kinder.

The lens flares were way overdone for sure.

Scotty became chief engineer when the previous one was killed, though I don't know exactly how they knew he was qualified to do the job since nobody actually knew him.

sadly that's the nature of the new writers of Trek. Cadet kirk who kept getting his a.ss kicked instantly became captain b/c he thought it would be cool and wanted to impress La Hura.

Silly annoyance: but why do people keep changing the spelling of Lt.Uhura's name?

Haven't seen the BD yet. Will get it soon.
As to the movie: Loved the graphics. Loved the casting (especially McCoy, who seems to have been a better DeForest Kelly than even Kelly was).

Reminded me of Alien 4. The writing was witty at times, but otherwise everything about it made no sense. From everyone being from the same town, to Nero's odd obsession to do anything *but* save Romulus, to the idea that you'd be racing under warp in interstellar space against anything as slow as a speed-of-light wave, to the whole idea of "red matter", to so heavily armed a mining ship, to why so heavily armed a ship even needed "red matter", to why Spock did basically nothing, to.

Oh, don't get me started. The plot made no sense at all.

Wrath of Kahn is good because the character interaction is good and, once you move past the issues with the genesis device, the plot is well conceived. Moby **** with space-ships.

The whole "mining" ship thing did bug me a bit too. Their War Birds are garbage compared to that thing. How likely is that?

The ship was so heavily armed with..... missles? are you kidding me?

Why did the ship have to be clouded in storm clouds and why were there pipes all over the friggin place in this movie? Every other scene had pipes and water.

Ok thanks you guys got me started again

I must have missed that. When did that happen?
