Got the Blu-Ray in from Amazon on thursday (previewed it then for sound/picture levels) and last night had a viewing party. I am more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek if I have to choose, but I did follow the TNG, DS9, Voyager and all the movies. I liked the story a lot, and as J.J. Abrahms explains on the extras disc, it's a Kirk-Spock story of how their relationship is formed along with that of the rest of the crew - everything else in the story is ancillary. This is the Star Trek movie I like most.
This Blu-Ray is awesome, better than what I experienced at the AMC 30 digital theater opening night. The raunchy brass section in the music scores (the brass of the James Bond theme sounds like smooth jazz in comparison), the phaser fight sequence (wow - love the dynamics going on here!), and the warp sequences (such tight punch and with a precise kick you can feel and hear... jaw dropping awesome!) really for the first time showed Dolby True HD was everybit as good as DTS HD Master Audio...I am relieved (I was concerned when the specs for the Blu-Ray came out and it was not DTS MA...).
Video is not as excellent as the audio, but still extremely good. Love how the movie is framed and shot, has a Star Trek visual feel to it while still being somewhat unique as its own movie. Lens flares work. Total audio-visual experience = most awesome Blu-Ray experience yet. Definately
THE Dolby True HD reference Blu-Ray.
Everybody at the viewing party REALLY liked the experience (at least half were seeing it for the first time) and now they are wanting another movie excuse to come over again. I showed the downloaded 720P trailer of "Avatar" as a preview, and everyone was saying 'forget the theater release it straight to Blu-Ray so we can watch it here'... LOL
My parents will be coming over tonight (unless my youngest sister goes into labor and delivers on the due date tonight!) They haven't seen it yet, so come on sis', you can hold out for one more night!
