Now you're on to something...that is a very definite possibilty...:) After hearing the ERM-6.2, I'd easily pay twice as much for it. It's a fantastic center channel speaker. I'm certain those 8.3s sound very good.

Reference level listening.

Hello Croseiv.

I was perusing the forum and came across your discovery of "craig's" review of the XPA-5. What caught my attention when I came across his review was that he was also considering the Sunfire Cinema Grand. I thought it was a well written review touching on some very basic, but often neglected points regarding amplification and the end product. As he described it, "The chain".
That being said, have you had the chance to take your system above -15dB with the new amp?

Yesterday, I had a chance to really crank it up, to -10dB. I couldn't go any higher, or should I say I didn't want to. Not that I didn't think the amp and/or speakers couldn't handle it, on the contrary, the higher I went, the better it sounded. Above -10dB became a little uncomfortable. I want to be able to hear when I'm 60!

So, my question to you now that you had the XPA-5 for a couple of weeks, have you had the chance to take it to reference level and if so, what how did the system respond?

Regards.

I can only imagine how loud it would be on your system with the Klipsch's at -10db....those are nearly 100bd sensitive speakers. I'm sure that had to with the reason why you reached an uncomfortable level at -10bd....

BTW: Nice additions croseiv...CONGRATS!!!

If "0dB" signifies some reference output (e.g. 70dB), then wouldn't "-10dB" on a volume control equate to the same loudness on any set of speakers assuming that the amps could drive them?

croseiv.....

You are way way beyond what this thread was about at the start "My simple system"..... your system is way beyond that now.... and I mean this in a good way..... Enjoy, you deserve it :D

Well my thinking could be completely wrong on this (and I would like to be corrected if it is) but where I was coming from on that post is--

Say with the XPA-5 connected to the Pre-pro/AVR turned to '0db' reference level, the XPA is pushing 200 watts to the connected speakers. Speakers, such as the Klipsch's, with a sensitivity of 98/100db are going to be playing louder than say if connected to the Polk's in Croseiv's or the likes of my RTi12's which I think the RT line of polks run in the 89/92db sensitivity range...

'0db' reference level delivers a specific amount of power to the speakers and speakers with higher sensitivities will be paying louder....is this logic flawed??? I have no idea...

I get where you're coming from. That's true for some receivers, and also true for others if you don't calibrate them. I'm used to my receiver that digitally adjusts the "0dB" setting to the reference level when the auto set-up is run.

Hi ld!

So, I have cranked it to -5 dB on the MV which actually equates to -5 dB below reference in my system. For comparison, I have played the 1015 at the same level many times. Granted, I am also using a new center channel speaker with the XPA-5, but I can say that there are much better dynamics being presented with my system now. Using the 1015 alone, the highs were shrill and tinkly sounding at that volume. Now they sound fuller and much more natural (less compressed?). I'm certain I was clipping the signal a bit with the 1015. It is quite loud, and as loud as I dare go in my system. Actual reference level in my house would be insane! :D I generally listen at -15- to -12 dB below reference any way (lower on some of the DTS-MA tracks). But for certain at higher volumes I can really tell a difference (and even at normal listeining levels). Much less fatiguing. I too want to be able to hear well at the age of 60.:) Over all, I am extremely impressed with the XPA-5. I really like the ERM-6.2 as well.

I think so....assuming the speakers were calibrated with an SPL meter.

Yeah, I've sort of considered that! It's still "somewhat" simple, but definitely more complex than when this thread first started...Thanks!:)

And I see where your coming from as well. I did not take channel leveling into account...
