I got 5 bucks that says that finish is polyurethane. That's an oil based varnish that shellac wont stick to as it is alcohol based if I remember all this right.

In your place I would call the furniture company and work out some other sort of goodwill deal and can the flooring contractor for a number of reasons I won't go into. Home Depot carries these little MinWax colored markers for these occurrences. Match the color up as best you can and apply to the raw wood. It won't penetrate the finished floor and can be wiped off. That way you are only altering what is already damaged and it get's the eye hook of white mark on dark floor to go away and it will only be noticeable upon very close inspection.

If you are able to get your wife's head that close to the living room floor and she is noticing the floor, we got bigger problems than that little scratch.

I am going to let the pro come out and do the floor correctly. The feet on the couch have several places that look to be scratched and then "touched up" with one of those furniture crayons. I am about to "go off" on the place that built this. If I wanted Room Store quality I would have bought a couch from Room Store and spent 1/3 the amount of money.

Just go to Home Depot and grab a package of stick-on felt circles. I have those under most of my furniture and never have a problem. The one chair that's scratching my floor is a swivel/rocker barrel chair that has a ring-type base. Nothing I've used the felt pads on has ever scratched my floor.

Well it sounds like you already have it sorted out, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents for others/future reference.

I used to work at a custom cabinet factory, and what we would use to fix small dings were these special wood repair crayons. You would just try to match the color of the wood as close as possible and rub it over the ding. It usually came out decent. We wouldn't try something as large as your scratches appear, but for home use it might be worth a try. They were something like these:

In the future, the above is a good starting point. These crayons have saved my bacon from the missus more than once. (She's a great markswoman with her .357, btw! )

Incidentally, that was a good idea taking the slider foot off to make it look like it was the furniture company's fault! Now, how about a picture of your bride lounging happily on the fancy new 5 footed couch?!

It was my fault, until we realized it was the chair she insisted on keeping when I wanted to dump it. Of course, the male reaction is "Oh well, whatever, scratches won't mess up how my gear sounds."

The sctratch actually ended up being under the area rug and under the couch but they will have to fix it regardless. It wasn't like that before the couch.
