Since I don't know if it's laquer or varnish... use shellac.
Shellac is great as it won't interact badly with either varnish or laquer.
I'd get a scrap piece of oak from the store when you get your shellac, and some tint.

Also.. since your going to be fixing finished wood, I'd sand the affected area with 120 grit (if the scratch is real rough go no lower than 100) , go to 200 and then end with 220 or 300 (depending on how the stock finish smoothness is right now).
It'll take a bit of time with prep work, and getting the tint just right, but if you do, it'll come out like it was never there.

I think your best bet is to just point out your mistake, and go from there. She's going to find out anyway, and you will be worse off once she figures out that you tried to hide it.

Here is a picture of the scratch.

Also here is a picture of the couch. She had it special made by Bernhardt, it took them 12 weeks to get it to us. To me, it looks like couches I have seen in showrooms but it is what she wanted. It does seem to be built well and will be great for movie watching.

Lift the couch and look at the feet- was it a screw, staple, stone, glider that scratched it? Personally, I don't think scratching a floor should be possible with a new sofa, because it should come with non-marring feet.

If the floor was recently finished and you know what was used, get some of it, sand it down and put a few coats on, letting them dry according to the directions.

Best plan- take her away for a long weekend or a week and arrange for someone to go in and repair it while you're gone. Make sure they get all of the odor out. Good as new and she'll never know.

I like the couch. It looks comfortable and I've always liked those long end pieces for kicking back and streching out on. If I had to change anything on that couch, it'd most likely be putting a cute girl on it and taking the tags off both ends.

Ok, I called her and told her about the scratch. She said "can you fix it", I said "yup".

I am about to give it a shot. The floor guy said to use PolyShade for a quick fix.

The area rug will actuall cover the spot but we remove it a lot to clean.

Nice! Considering you probably spent a ton on that couch compared to what it would cost to fix the floor they didn't want to lose a customer.

Greg, love the couch. The color really adds to that room. Unfortunately, the scratches don't. To be honest, they look very deep and are quite nasty looking. It has been nice knowing you buddy! Your wife will be upset no doubt about that. However, it can be repaired. Maybe your wife will cool-off so to speak and find a reasonable solution. After all, we are in a happy time of year.........right? Maybe just being up-front with her and admitting you made a mistake will be a better approach. Let her know you will make up for it and do so. BTW, you have a lovely home there Greg!

They made the couch and delivered it with a screw vs. a foot so yes they are at fault. The guy didn't even argue, he just said he was sorry and he would hire a company to come and fix the floor.
