Phil,

The 13.5" driver from JL Audio displaces 39% more air than the 12" equivalent. So, to answer your question, yes, it does make a sizeable difference.
So, the difference in mainly in spl but what about extension? Just curious is all as I would never be able to afford either of them. Never hurts to dream. Thanks for the info. Heck, hope to be able to hear one some day.

Cheers,

Phil

if you are talking about the F113 vs. F112, the F113 has more extension.

if you are talking about the 13W7 and 12W7, both can be tuned the same, though the 12W7 will run out of xmax earlier than the 13W7

JL Posted Specs...

Fathom f112:
Freq. Response (anechoic): 21 Hz – 119 Hz (± 1.5 dB)
–3 dB at 19 Hz / 150 Hz
–10 dB at 17 Hz / 167 Hz

Fathom f113:
Freq. Response (anechoic): 20 Hz – 86 Hz (± 1.5 dB)
–3 dB at 18 Hz / 127 Hz
–10 dB at 16 Hz / 154 Hz

The Fathom subs from JL Audio have been stated to have reworked drivers, and are engineered slightly different from the normal car audio drivers 12W7, and 13W7.... The F112s have better upper bass response, while the F113's provide better extension in the lower bass area..

Regardless, I would love to have sealed 4 - 13W7 in my HT... just to see how they sounded... or like RMK, 2 - 12W7's and 2-13W7's to flatten out the FR.

That would certainly be interesting... :)

Very interesting Mike. Never really given it that much thought as you kinda put it into perspective for me. I guess what I am really trying to discern is just how much more extension would the F113 have over the F112. Just curious is all. Never hurts to dream right?

aside from extension, you would expect the bigger woofer to do the low frequencies better too :)

Interesting to so many of us. I would just like to hear one or even better four of them. I also want to demo an Ultra 13. Hence, the Ultra would be more doable than either of the F112 or the F113. Thanks for the info warp. It is once again much appreciated.

Cheers,

Phil

Hmmmmmmmmmm

I thought this would be common knowledge that if it's "Bigger" it will go "Lower".

The F112 is a very clean sub indeed, and the F113 will pressurize a larger room with the facts annunaki stated, 39% more displacement over the F112.

The F112 is smaller than the F113. However, it only gives up 1 Hz of extension, (-3 dB of 19 Hz vs 18 Hz) and a few dB of output to the F113. More importantly, according to Manville Smith of JL Audio, it has better response in the upper bass ranges that are more important to music, if thats your thing...

Which is one of the reasons that RMK! bought 2 of each, to cover the entire spectrum with ease, clarity and extension...

"better" - more SPL playing the same low frequencies

Sweet dude... what design are you looking at... thats the 13w7 I assume..?

Ported/sealed... Tune... cu ft?
12W7, vented, over 45 sq. in. of port area, approx. 19hz tuning, 5.3 cu.ft. net. Will be using a Behringer DCX2496 and an EP2500

It will seem to play deeper as it and has more output at the same low frequencies. Sound quality is about dead even. Enclosure size increases a bit though.

LOL........good one maz. :p:p I guess that I never realized that the 13W7 would have that much more surface area than a 12W7. More specifically, by having a 1.5" driver size difference could end up being so significant. In other words, I figured there would be very little difference between the 12W7 and the 13W7. As such, it appears I was wrong even though both of these drivers are cut from the same cloth so to speak.

Cheers,

Phil

Thanks warp as I find this fascinating. Have gotten the chance to look at what the W7 drivers cost and lets just say I am still in shock.:eek: Thanks for the info.

Mike, thanks for this summation. On a side note, I would like to mention that after seeing the Rosewood finish posted by both warp and maz, that I am quite impressed. Initially on one of your previous threads, I voted for the Oak finish. However, getting a better look kinda leans me more towards the Rosewood. The pics on SVS's site, like most offerings, do NOT do their subs justice imho. Moreover, I am usually more fond of the Maple finish the most, but have to admit the Rosewood is stunning to say the least.

Cheers,

Phil

Once again, thanks for the info. One day I will get a chance to demo one of them. In fact, I may get to this Fall. Thus, I am going to be in an area where a JL dealer is close by. Might just have to make time for an extra stop.

Cheers,

Phil

Assuming the first one goes really well, and I know it will, I will probably add a second.

Cool... your really close in Boston... dam, makes me want some Clam Chowder.

I live in Milwaukee, and it was 2-3 days shipping for me here.. :)

My son and I had a great time on a trip we took a few years back, we were headed to through Niagra Falls, to Maine for Lobster as our ultimate destination.. no plans, just Lobster. When we got to the fork in the road, it said New York / Boston, I told him that Boston was known for Clam Chowder, wanna go get some...? He said, that sounds great... and after visiting there for a few days, we headed up for Lobsters in Maine... It was a very memorable trip... on the basis of food !!

Yep, we are Chowda heads!! Great chowda in boston, actually I had chowda tonight in Tiverton R.I. If you make it to boston again I highly recomend Woodmans in Essex (right next to Gloucester) for Lobster!!
Gloucester is one of the oldest fishing ports. I am going to introduce SVS to all my friends and family. My wifes cousins and their dad work in audio sales, they deal with interconnects, and sell PSB/ parasound/ russound and bunch of other stuff and they have never heard of SVS. They are the ones that got me my VR3s for $500 for the pair. Wait till they get a load of this.
