I watched it and I didn't like it very much. It was shot well (visually appealing) and I like what seems to be an accurate depiction of the Mayans (even if it isn't politically correct;)). Still, a little too graphic for me.

***SPOILER*** Aside from the great scenery and photography, the thing I liked most is how even with the brutal Mayans there was a tight family bond with the main character doing whatever it took to protect his family.

As for the subtitles, well, while I don't mind reading, I would rather READ a book and WATCH a movie. Having to read subtitles for a whole movie is somewhat distracting to me. I miss too many visuals and I don't care to watch this whole movie again to catch what I missed, but that's just me.
They deffinitely portrayed the disconnection between the characters well. For example. The Mayans had trapped the locals and wanted to use them as slaves, and the Mayans where portrayed as having full lives (good or bad) and would certainly not be viewed as bad among their own and you almost feel for some of them. But they treat the locals as if they have no sole and so no respect of any kind, they were merely objects.

Ramble, ramble, I know. Let me know if none of that made any sense.:D

“If you could only see what I have seen with your eyes” ...
You need fast eyes mate I was concentrating on three things visual image subtitles even while I turn around to centre back as it seemed so real whilst keeping one on the screen.:)

By bringing Mike back to reason;):D He needn't be scared of bad Mayans.:D;) And yes it will get out of control, it will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it. I think that line came from The hunt for Red October...Fred Thompson I think.
Thompson was in that movie !! I didn't really think about this until now. Alec Baldwin and Fred Thompson in the same movie ??!!

yes, I like violence violence. but I don't like reality violence. it's like I want to kill them mayans myself. but of course at the end of the movie, the arrival of cortez and his posse, we see a hint of "justice" (you hear that? justice! :) )
because cortez will beat the **** out of the mayans.

kind of like a moral lesson:
"you have to be the biggest kid on the block, or you'll get beat on!"

haha you thought I was gonna give a real moral lesson didn't you?

there's this saying:
"even the barber let's someone else cut their hair"
Cortez met up with and conquered the Aztecs. The Mayans were either gone or at the very last stages of their civilization when he arrived. I will have to dig out the timeline to be sure.

Blade Runner? Roy to "eyeball geneticist"?
Yeah thanks mate I should have placed the name of the character below the quote.:)

I’m not sure for certain if this would have any historical key facts?

I saw this in the theatre and really liked it. The violence was a little much for me. It probably won't make my personal connection. I know some people decided not to see it because of Mel's transgressions and subsequent treatment (I'm not going to post any comments about that though) But I like the film.

I totally agree with Buckeye, once it started, I almost turned it off but I am glad that I didn't...

Just watched it the other day...I was drawn in. It was a really good movie. Brutal, yes, but other than the sacfricial scenes, I didn't think overtly so.

I had my brutality fill that night though, after watching this, I skimmed through Showtime and stopped on Passion of the Christ...talk about brutal. Wow. The scene where Jesus was beaten/whipped with the little metal "clip" things on the end of the chains. I'm not religious, but that movie was tough to watch at times...I didn't catch the last 20 mins or so, I was falling asleep (it was late).

Just watched it and my girlfriend and I thought it a very fun movie. Overall I was extremely impressed with the sound quality, especially the subwoofer use and I thought the picture quality on the BD was pretty good. Most scenes were very vivid but a few had noticable grain.

I would rate it 4 stars and would probably watch it again.

I can't abide subtitles, period. If they won't go to the trouble of releasing an English-dubbed version, I won't go to the trouble of watching it.

Most movies that are English dubbed are horrible, if given the option I would always rather read a movie than listen to a poorly translated track. You're just being lazy.

The PQ on the Blu-ray of Apocalypto is really very stunning and the 24-bit/48kHz uncompressed 5.1 PCM track is brilliant.

Well I finally watched this last night. All in all, a pretty good movie. It was easy to get into the story despite having to read subtitles. As a matter of fact, I didn't even realize I was reading them I was that into it. Picture quality is pretty good. It seems to be a good video transfer, though I only have an SDTV using component, non progressive. Was it my DVD player or was some of the color supposed to fade out in certain scenes for effect?

The ambience in the rear channels really made me feel as though I was in the Yucatan forest. the use of LFE is not dramatic. Only a few scenes where it really made me take notice. My sub is calibrated about 5db hot or so.

I am not sure that the depiction of the Mayan city builders as bloodthirsty killers was totally accurate, but it was good for the movie. I would probably purchase this movie after seeing it. It was interesting the way the priests used their knowledge of the sun and eclipse to manipulate the masses. I like the way the omen and dreams played into the plot throughout the film as well.
