Wow, I can't believe this movie doesn't have a thread of it's own:eek:

I thought this movie was fantastic!! At first, I was a little annoyed being forced to read subtitles, but after a brief period, I got used to it. (language is spoken in a Mayan)

I thought the movie started a little slow. That... combined with the subtitles, and I almost turned it off before it really got good. Once the movie got going, I was hooked right to the very end.

5 stars

A lot of people I know didn't like it. I liked it a lot. I think the level of violence may have turned some off to it, but I thought the story was good, if a bit too common, and the sound was excellent. Visually impressive too.

Indeed, this was a great movie. I appreciate when an american director choses to make a movie about another culture and doesn't have them speak English, it kills part of the characters, IMO. This movie really makes you feel for the heros, very well done overall.

Great movie, it's about as accurate as possible. Loved the ending. It wasn't that violent, any half-baked movie today has more gore and violence, this is how these people really lived, another reason I loved it so much was because it is so politically incorrect, to actually show how the "natives" really behaved, they made the Europeans look like a bunch of girl scouts. Highly recommended.

I have been very skeptical of renting this one. I am not a huge fan of subtitles. The good words here have me thinking a bit more about it.

When I read the back of the jacket it made it seem more like a love story and that kind of turned me off. I was hoping it would get more into the mystery of the Mayan culture. Maybe delve more into their high level of intelligence and significance of their calendar perhaps?

I am very much intrigued by ancient societies. Especially ones who exhibited high levels of sophistication and technology.

This one isn't about technology and innovation though, it is more about society, politics and power. Wherever people are, there will always be those who are simply trying to have a good life and those who seek power and control... A good flick no doubt, but not for everyone IMO. Ancient societies are very interesting to me too.

Have you seen the trailer for 10000 B.C.? Looks pretty interesting as well.

What is it with AH members and not liking to read? I haven't heard so many people complain about subtitles since the fifth grade! ;)

Oh come on Mikey, remember Freddie Kruger, Michael Mayers (sp?) all those movies were gorier than this, what makes this movie disturbing is that it's indicative of how these people lived, so it's true to life.:D

One main reason why I brought because it played at the Empire in digital, after reading the reviews of how great it sounded I had to buy it and wasn’t disappointed it was great and the ending wow that looked and sound cool the sound of the ocean and the new arrivals have found a new world.

Audio commentary by (Mel Gibson) and (Farhad Safina) and "Gibson" is out of control, just listening to the guy near the end credits “SDDS sucks” and “colour by Deluxe” the guy is nuts!:D

LFE.1 was used subtlety in the film while most of the low end is either covered by the LCR surrounds and with deep waterfall sounds it adds a little more deeper extension without mudding or colourizing the sound. So make sure you’re sub bass extension is calibrated correctly and the LFE.1 channel sub bass or array isn’t going to overpower the mix!

I was surprised by its openness of the jungle sounds and thou this has been attempted before in other films, it wasn’t a bad Dolby mix dialogue or the original linguistic of the natives made this all seem realistic and thou subtitles are provided to help the viewer follow the story it was bad.

By bringing Mike back to reason;):D He needn't be scared of bad Mayans.:D;) And yes it will get out of control, it will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it. I think that line came from The hunt for Red October...Fred Thompson I think.

yes, I like violence violence. but I don't like reality violence. it's like I want to kill them mayans myself. but of course at the end of the movie, the arrival of cortez and his posse, we see a hint of "justice" (you hear that? justice! :) )
because cortez will beat the **** out of the mayans.

kind of like a moral lesson:
"you have to be the biggest kid on the block, or you'll get beat on!"

haha you thought I was gonna give a real moral lesson didn't you?

there's this saying:
"even the barber let's someone else cut their hair"

I watched it and I didn't like it very much. It was shot well (visually appealing) and I like what seems to be an accurate depiction of the Mayans (even if it isn't politically correct;)). Still, a little too graphic for me.

***SPOILER*** Aside from the great scenery and photography, the thing I liked most is how even with the brutal Mayans there was a tight family bond with the main character doing whatever it took to protect his family.

As for the subtitles, well, while I don't mind reading, I would rather READ a book and WATCH a movie. Having to read subtitles for a whole movie is somewhat distracting to me. I miss too many visuals and I don't care to watch this whole movie again to catch what I missed, but that's just me.
