I've tried to understand the difference between filtering and splitting but can't. I think it's allowed in places with high congestion, but in the Twin Cities I never see enough motorcycles to see that being the case. I'm also not a fan of hardcore bicyclists. The ones who don't move to the shoulder, or where there side-by-side chatting and taking up the street.
Motorcycle filtering is the act of safely moving a motorcycle between lanes of stopped or slow-moving traffic to navigate congested areas. In Minnesota, lane filtering became legal on July 1, 2025, with specific rules for motorcyclists, including staying at least 15 mph faster than the surrounding traffic or under 25 mph total. It is not allowed on freeway on-ramps, at roundabouts, or in school or work zones.
