Some words regarding Neal Young removing his music from Spotify.

Do you think he's being fairly portrayed by the media or do you think he's being, at least partly, unfairly mischaracterized?
He seems to have made some comments he should have done, and having anti-vaxxers on his show two years into the pandemic with unprepared and free wheeling interviews sure gives some push back. So that part is fair enough.

Lol. Okay, if you don't wanna give me a complete answer I guess I'll take what I can get...

Then you should specify which, in your opinion, mischaracterizations of him by the media you have in mind. I’m not a mind reader. ;)

If he gives equal time spread amongst credible people with differing opinions, that's one thing. But to give equal airtime to quacks, in order to appear balanced, that's another thing altogether.

I'm not sufficiently interested in Joe Rogan to listen to him. My main point in this thread is that Neil Young has every right to ask Spotify to choose between him and JR. It's not not a question free speech, censorship or "cancel culture". NY does not want to be associated with a streaming service that gives airtime to a podcaster who has voiced misinformation and had guests who have done the same. Spotify chose Rogan. I assume NY is content with that decision - he's certainly wealthy enough not to have to worry about lost income.
I agree with all of your points.

My point is I think Neil is overreacting and making a stink out of something when he doesn't need to. He has every right to do it, but in the process I think Joe's being unfairly portrayed and a lot of folks are jumping to conclusions based on no, or insufficient evidence.

That he's an anti vaxxer with an agenda who's actively denying and intentionally leading a misinformation campaign..?

*Edit: First I'm curious if that's what you first thought, and second do you still feel that way if you did? That's what I've been asking for 2 pages now. I wasn't looking for a review of his style or what you think he may still be at fault for. He's addressed pretty much all of that anyway.

That Is quite a charge, and I can not recall that media in general has claimed so, or even close to it. You got a link to that?

I do not think he is “intentionality leading a misinformation campaign” but he has allowed his guests to do so on more than one occasion, and did not learn from that push back. So he has contributed to the spread of misinformation that has cost many people their lives. What he experiences now is deserved.

Well... the letter signed by 270 "experts" (I put quotes because some of those signatures included unqualified science youtubers and influencers as well as experts) calling for Spotify to pull him from the platform for spreading dangerous misinformation is what this thread is all about. It's why Neil pulled his catalogue.

Do you have a link to something showing he spread misinformation that has caused many to lose their lives?

Also, some comments in this very thread have made that charge. I'm asking you how you felt/feel. I've always respected your opinion. I'm not wanting to be adversarial.

But he is, or was hopefully, spreading misinformation on his podcast. I thought I was clear about that in my posts.

The open letter isn’t the media, though, and it doesn’t support your strong charges earlier either. Rogan should do a number of things, as a professional podcaster, as I’ve written in my replies to you. Being a professional podcaster making a lot of money on it is also why I don’t cut him that much slack.

Fair enough. I really just wanted your pov of his character from the very start of this thread based on headlines and accusations, and if it changed after watching his response and receiving some more information.

If I'm reading you right, you did not have an opinion based on any headlines or even see any of the more sensational ones out there about it. No I don't have a link right handy, but if you think there aren't outlets shouting from the rooftops that he's doing it then you're mistaken. That is for sure the narrative being spun by some groups.

I wonder how 1960's and 70's Neil would have felt about someone reacting to his views in the same way. He's had a lot of non mainstream and unpopular views that were considered very controversial at one time too. There are quite a few things if someone talked about as little as 8 months ago, for example the effectiveness of cloth masks, that would have gotten them deplatformed that are accepted as fact and openly discussed now.

Welp I didn't realize this thread has blown up so much. I spent 9 pages catching up. Good convo from everyone

This is what I've determined

Any self respecting audioholic would never listen to Spotify over Tidal or Amazon because they don't have the same standards in audio quality

Hence we have natural immunity to Joe Rogans influence thanks to our tastes in audio

Guys do you know what this means?

It means Audioholics mission to spread great audio throughout the world just got more important! We can save this world!

If everyone loved audio like we do no one would listen to Spotify therefore Rogan wouldn't even exist and we could save the world from his evil campaign of mass destruction!!!!

Its time for Audioholics all over to unite!!! Let's spread great audio across the world and save this motherfuggin planet!!!!!

Well, I can honestly say I stopped my Spotify subscriptions specifically because of how bad it sounded. Not as bad as YouTube Music, but bad.

Tidal is a significant jump in quality. The MQA stuff is stupid, but other than that I'm happy.

I might have to give tidal a try. I have/had an account but never actually used it! I sign up for free trials and forget all about them!
Well, the fact that a utility exists that lets me download EVERYTHING Tidal has in 16/44.1 or higher makes them hard to beat for me. I've filled a LOT of gaps in my collection that way.

How freely can you use those downloads? As long as you have the app on the device or ? I've not downloaded much from Spotify....I tend to just buy it if I like it enough....and when I have downloaded most of the time I forget to play the download except occasionally when I'm in the car and I had downloaded it via the phone app and remember I did that :).

They are 100% offline FLAC rips that, as far as I can tell, are exactly the same as my actual CD rips. No DRM to be found.
