I tested HDR10 today with the new update. Nearly all banding is now gone. There is still some slight banding in some scenes, but it’s very much watchable now. I would agree that number of 95% of banding is gone.

I have contacted Yamaha of my findings, both with atmos and HDR10, to let them know they are on the right path of nearly fixing the two most critical issues I have found. I would encourage other users that have these issues to do the same. The more info they have, the better they can combat these issues.

Well when I try to return their call, no one picks up. Go figure. That’s more or less what I have come to expect from Yamaha....
Im not singling you out on poor customer support but I've seen it mentioned a lot in this thread. Maybe MCode could chime in but I think customer support staff are under staffed because of COVID and the staff that are working are stretched thin. I say this for the following two reasons; prior to Covid, I got responses no later than 4 hours as well as follow up calls on AVRs I bought used and were no longer in warranty. The second reason is that I had hard time getting a hold of anyone at PSB, especially the parts department. When I finally talked to someone and I explained my contact ordeal, they apologized and told me that COVID has reduced the amount of staff allowed to work in the facility. I suspect customer support is hurting for MANY MANY companies, not just Yamaha and PSB.

I’ll second 3db’s comment. Everything since COVID support-wise seems to be worse.

As for the firmware update I’m definitely getting better Atmos performance. I felt like the channels had better presence with positioning and placement of the sound and as was mentioned the front heights were better utilized.

It could also be in my head but I’m quite sure running the YPAO calibration again since the firmware update showed improvements also. I’d be curious if anyone has seen the same. Maybe that is just standard practice after an update.

I have the matching Elac Debut 2 center. I’ve not had trouble with dialog in other shows but it was just so bad it seemed it had to be the mix. Sounds like from the other comment it is. Massively poor dialog track.

I have bumped the crossover up but when it gets to high I sense the placement of the sub a bit too much.

I do wish I could have snagged the matching Klipsch center but nothing was in stock with an easy return.

As to Mazer’s comment I get they are different. That’s the point of checking them out. I’ve never heard them so doesn’t hurt to take a listen. I’ve greatly enjoyed the Elacs since getting them especially in two channel mode with the sub. That said there is no way I’d be happy with them without the sub. It takes too much volume to bring out the bass in the Elacs. I’m not an expert or audiophile so I’m sure my tastes don’t require much to be happy but I know what I like. I just want to see if the Klipsch I like enough more (if at all) to justify the cost.

I watched Tenent on 4K disc format and that has got to be one of the most dynamic soundtracks I've come across. I had to raise the volume to hear the dialog and as a result I got slammed in the gut over and over with bass. I looked like the Maxell cassette dude after the movie. Sweet Baby Geezus!!!

I still need to update my RX-V6A. The Yamaha website does not show the 1.26 update on the RX-V6A support page but I received an email from Yamaha asking me if I'd done it. It's supposed to help 4K/HDR banding and ARC issues which were both big problems with my TSR-700. So, while my RX-V6A seemed fine after 1.23, I guess it can only get better after 1.26, right? Seriously, right? Eh, if I brick it the Jawas can have the little droid. :p

I am looking for a new 4k capable receiver for my bedroom 5.1 setup. I have my heart set on a Yamaha and saw this TSR-700 at CostCo today for an even lower price previously stated. I am concerned with all of the video issues being discussed here. Should I be concerned? I see that firmware 1.26 makes a big improvement.

I’m very happy with mine but I am NOT using any of the HDMI 2.1 features or 8k. Just have it hooked to an Apple TV, PS4 Pro and a Sony UBP-X800M2 UHD player into an older LG OLED. I think the last firmware update a week or so ago made it pickup Atmos content a bit faster and gives better use of front height but that is just a gut feeling. Very happy with mine considering what I paid. The savings on this went towards my SVS sub. That said I’d like to shoot for a 9 speaker setup next year and a higher end receiver but that’s mainly because I want back surround and front height together. It has nothing to do with a dissatisfaction with the receiver itself.

Easy returns if you don’t like it too.

Peruse the thread and you’ll see plenty of back and forth on this receiver for some time.

Get it, run the 1.26 update. No good, take it back to Costco. Finally ran my 1.26 update for the RX-V6A last week. All good, slight hiccup with atmos on Apple TV 4K, but that's Apple's fault.

$329 in-store, still $399 on the .com

thanks for the motivation speeches everyone
That TSR-700 is the same as the RX-V6A, for the money the TRS-700 is the better deal. I was going to get that one but the Costco store near me was sold out.

I found an answer or two in this thread...then decided to binge it all.
It might be going dormant, but I need to thank everybody in this thread -- WELL DONE!

I don't want a Good Grief

"Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh No, Not Again!"
It was great to track the compressed timeline of rumors, tide going in/out, lots of analysis/info and some good humor whilst
  • some decided against
  • some bought...then kept or returned
  • at least one re-buy
I'm on the buy multiple side. Picked up 3 (TSR-700) from COSTCO.
One early for $399...two more between Thanksgiving & Christmas at $329.
(Costco was good...price-matched the first one).

I used them to replace aging NAD and dead Onkyo, plus add a new AV room. (they did not replace my 2 best kits).

Because I have a wealth of speakers, etc., I was able to create a "budget" system around a new LG CX!
However, a WEALTH is never enough...
I am now wandering around rest of Forums for other bits. $$$$

I love them = they sound great + no issues (except Xbox) + like the look + use browser (not on-screen) setup + phones (not remotes) for all.

Be Safe All.

FYI, the TSR-700 went on sale this morning and Costco.com gave me a price adjustment.

I bought the costco special, the TSR-700 and Samsung tu700 TV. I have a few small issues. I also have FiOS cable and a Chromecast 4k. eARC is on, Fios is connected by Fios->Receiver(HDMI2)->TV. HDMI3 has the chromecast

1. When I turn the fios remote on, only fios and the tv goes on. I need to turn the receiver on manually. Any clues to get all this on from the Fios or TV remote? The Receiver has HDMI Control ON. Fios/TV/Receiver turns off when I click the off on the Fios or TV Remote. The fios remote works fine for receiver volume, but the remote might be going through the TV to cec to change the volume. Odd, but maybe done on purpose, when I turn on the tv, the sound and picture comes through on the last hdmi port i was using, but the power is off so the tv speakers are used on the not receiver.

2. Smaller issue, the TV has some sort of control of HDMI ports where you can use the universal remote settings. Is this to change to the receiver and change the receiver input? I created a new input on the tv to control the receiver and the type of device it is attaching. When I click on it, it changes to the receiver, but I can not switch the input of the receiver, can the tv somehow change the input. (This might be the wrong forum area for this question). I am trying to connect to the hdmi3 and a chromecast 4k. The chrome cast might not be sending an on ping, but not sure if that would be the issue.

Hello and welcome. Do you have the model number of your fios box? You have a few options for controlling your devices via HDMI control and the Universal remote control function of the TV.

vms4100, I played around with the "switch audio device", but it did not change anything. Hopefully you have some other option i did not playwith.

Try these settings in your fios box if you have not already done so. If so, you may want to try the Universal Remote function of the TV remote control. Set up properly, you will be able to control all of your devices with it and it will switch the Yamaha to the corresponding device when selected.

I think the problem you are going to have unless I’m misunderstanding is switching to a port unless it is powered up. I had issues with both Apple TV and PS4 getting powered up together and the AVR not knowing which input to use. I turned off the control of the PS4 through HDMI to fix. Now if turn on the PS4 it selects the right port.

I suppose if you can get to power everything up then maybe you could, if remote supports, use the universal control ability to program the source selection for the receiver on the TV remote.

Unfortunately I don’t have a new enough TV to mess with it but I also don’t have enough sources to warrant it either. I am frequently only using one source and that is the Apple TV. Anything else I just turn it in when I’m ready.

Also noticed the comment about the receiver being $330 now again. What an awesome price for this if you have a Costco membership.

Thanks to both of you! The settings on the fios/samsung tv was already set that way the fios page says too. I also reset the fios STB, since I already reset the TV and Yamaha. To recap, when I hit the power with either the fios remote or TV remote, the yamaha, does not turn on. Only the TV and fios and the tv uses the tv speakers till I turn on the receiver manually.

What is weird, is if all is off and i hit the power on the ChromeCast 4k, the tv wakes up, but not the receiver. The ChromeCast4k is connected to hdmi3 of the receiver.

XenoCron, you work correct on your assumptions. I tried universal Remote, I setup 2 connections. The easy one was Fios->Rec HDMI2->TV and the harder(there is no pre-known device for the chromecast, i faked it with a different device type, i said a blu-ray) ChromeCast->Rec Hdmi3->TV. When the I select either one, the fios source is always selected. I should try with a known device, but other than an old blu-ray that is in the house, i do not have anything else.. Maybe the tv tells the device to send a ping to the receiver to switch inputs and since i faked out the chromecast 4k, the ping is not sent?

FYI, switching imports is not a big issue for me, the turning on the receiver is. I wrote a small smartthings program to voice control the source inputs from a google home which works nicely.
