I wouldn't worry about the HDMI issue too much as @gene stated, it's only for the VRR stuff (IIRC) and everything in your chain has to be compatible or it doesn't matter. It is very cool tech though. I've got it on my PC monitor and I wouldn't go back to a static refresh rate again.
