You do know there is other programming out there.
So that's all you have? Not surprised. I suppose you're with Bill Maher who actually hopes for a recession so people will be influenced to vote against Trump. There's that liberal compassion and logic.

I'm not sure what happened, but I watched a clip of Mahar with Colion Noir and I actually agreed with a couple of Maher's points. Experts are still checking me out- I'll report later if they find something. :)

I thought Maher considered himself Libertarian.

Yeah, Neil deGrasse Tyson recently stepped in a massive cow pie for saying the same sort of thing. The challenge, Mark, is that mass shootings are like plane crashes. You can compare plane crashes to car crashes all you want, but emotionally each plane crash death is equal to about 10,000 car crash deaths, and so it goes for mass shooting deaths. Some occurrences just rattle people’s sense of well-being, and action is demanded whatever the cost.
I think the difference between mass shootings and the 14,000 other deaths caused by people using guns is that the mass shootings traumatize the nation (I think the media are at fault for this) and the others traumatize individuals or small groups that are specific to the victims.

This link shows info for the last 115 mass shootings, including mental health of the shooter (if known), as well as whether they got the weapon(s) legally. Most had some kind of disorder or a strong trigger and most got their weapons legally because of HIPAA, which doesn't allow obtaining mental health info during a background check.

Here's an overview of firearms possession laws in Canada.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/canada/a-look-at-canada-s-gun-ownership-laws-1.4026397

Of note:
"Getting a licence also entails personal reference checks and a "variety of background checks (and) in some cases, in-depth investigations," the RCMP says. Applicants must provide information on their mental health, employment and marital status when getting or renewing a licence."

So, if you have a history of mental health problems, that would be grounds for refusal of a licence. Also, if you have a spouse who doesn't want you to have firearms, fugedaboutit. But then, if your wife stops you from getting a licence, you probably don't belong together anyway...

Yeah, well, in the US, as with just about everything else, we like freedom to an extreme. Here's 'MORE' is the favorite word, even if it falls under 'Just because you can, doesn't mean you should'. We have a thing called HIPAA that prohibits disseminating information that could be damaging to the pertinent person, even if it would prevent this kind of shyte. There's such stigma surrounding being considered 'mentally imperfect' that nobody wants to step on the toes of those when it fits. If you look at the link I posted, you'll see that most mass shootings occur at the workplace and that hits home pretty hard for me since a guy I grew up with was hunted down and killed by an employee at his business. Drug abuse needs to take center stage for this, too- that was the cause for Pat's killer.

Mental health and illegal access to weapons- it's too easy for them to get their grubby mitts on guns and Congress is too gutless to develop a way to prevent it. They should just let the states do it and when 60% agree on the terms, adopt it as a national policy. That way, they won't be seen as 'anti-gun' by their rabid constituents.

The problem- when someone is motivated, they don't give a rat's ass if something is illegal.

Yeah, I looked at your link. The pattern is pretty clear.

It's a good illustration of the difference between individual and collective/societal rights and it's a difficult task to balance the two.

Easy. Trump got elected based on the promise to “MAGA”. That’s it.
...
You mean all that trolling by the Russian hackers and Cambridge Analytica didn't convince enough people to swing the electoral college in 3 states?

Let me say that I Am impressed by the discourse on a highly charged topic. I thought sure this thread would be slammed shut after a few hours.
Just wait, we still have a few hours left. :)

I see where ya coming from now, its cool. No fan of theirs at all, but when did they become the top problem? Before trump was elected, they where basically nothing, just another hate group.

.
Mostly because it is long overdue and the drumpf keeps stirring this pot and we have had several mass shootings because of it. It has a long history in the US, it doesn't need revival.

So did Reagan. Even Obama and Clinton have used the phrase. What exactly it means has always escaped me, seems more a fantasy than reality. Was it back before we became tools of the military industrial complex? Defeating the Nazis? Gave women the vote? Freed the slaves? Just where on the timeline does it fall?

Actually, it is not really correct that the NRA receives $0 in government funds. The NRA is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization, so it pays no income tax on over $400 million in annual income, meaning it effectively gets a subsidy from the government. Actually, governments, plural, since non-profits are generally exempt from state and local income taxes too.

Where is the liberal support for stricter gun-crime penalties? Again with the abdication of personal responsibility. Let's say if you commit a felony with a firearm, there is a mandatory 20 years in prison... no parole. This on top of any other charges. Rather than hold offenders responsible, you want to whittle away the rights of law-abiding citizens with laws that would have no affect on actual criminals. This tells me all the liberal compassion is nothing but a smokescreen to hide their big, socialist government agenda. The affected families and friends are devastated. Why don't you want to crack down on the offenders? (I think I know.)

FYI- we had 40 mass shootings during Obama, 220 people died.
