As of today, Cannabis is legal in Canada

Younger people who use large amounts of pot have been found to have cognitive disabilities and if you have ever spent a lot of time in shopping malls, you have seen the 'mall rats' who spend their days hanging out and getting high. Vacant eyes, can't comprehend much of anything and they often go on to mediocrity, at best. I worked in a mall for ten years and it was ridiculous.

Define 'lifetime user'.

I just Google searched 'effects of pot on young brains' and got 28.1 million hits-

https://www.apa.org/monitor/2015/11/marijuana-brain
Why the truck would I go to a shopping mall? That's just brain damage to begin with....

The effects of stupid consumerism and religion are still worse.

I don't know, maybe you realize that you need something and you're driving past? It makes more sense to go there than to wait until you get home and buy it online. The malls here suck, especially the one closest but those mall rats who hung out when I worked at a mall were just about brain dead.

How did you go to consumerism and religion from pot?

Why not? :) Consumerism and malls go hand in hand and you brought it up. Vacant eyes, really? You're an expert now, and that indicates pot particularly? Or you were bored with the mall job and would hang out with them but not toke? You just look into their eyes while under all that lovely natural mall light and made your diagnoses? More likely a variety of other drugs, even those pushed on us by our lovely medical community pushing pharmaceuticals. Religion can cause that vacant look, too. I see it everytime the christians (the only kind that proselytize like that here at least) come ringing my doorbell trying to save my soul.

I've smoked pot twice in my almost 63 years and it did pretty much nothing but make me a little sleepy and the cough for a couple of days was annoying as hell.. Hardly anything I wanted to do a second time, but I was assured that my first time must have been "crappy stuff" and this time would be different. It wasn't. No buzz, no nothing, but a slight drowsy feeling and a lot of coughing. As far as what pot does to someone on a long term heavy use basis, my former best friend, who began smoking and eating it about 1972, and continues to heavily use it today, looks and acts much younger than his 63 years. He looks fantastic, his only real change from high school is his hair is gone. He weighs about the same as he always has, and looks about 20 years younger than his one year younger wife, who never used pot much at all. He's had the same job almost 40 years, makes great money, 3 kids a few grandkids and is having a great life. Why am I not friends with him anymore? It was the pot, simply because he hounded me to smoke it all the time, and eat his awful pot cookies and brownies all the time. Another guy I've known almost as long as my former best friend also has used it heavily since about 15 or 16, and like my former best friend, he looks great at 64. His wife doesn't do any drugs or drink, and she looks like his mother, when they are born just days apart. While he hasn't made the money my former best friend did, he just retired and is doing well. If only the people I know who drink and take "hard" drugs looked as good as they do. One girl I've known since I was 18 and she was 16 looks like a scarecrow. She's been in rehab for both cocaine and meth(at 55 and 60 years old!). Another woman I know came up to me and a friend at Kroger's a while back and neither of us knew who the hell she was until she told us. She was really good looking, a long time ago, before she pickled herself with booze.

This thread is about pot and I referred to the mall rats, not malls, in general. I didn't say I was bored with that job, either- if I had been, I wouldn't still be in that business 40 years later.

It wasn't their eyes, it was the smell of pot, their vacant stare, lack of understanding simple questions and lack of more constructive activities.

WRT hard-core religious types- is it the way they act like they're completely blissed out by the Lord's love (ever talk to born again Christians?)?

Some people can handle being altered, some need to be altered after they find ways to be. Your friends who look younger than their years may look that good because they probably don't worry about things very much (Don't worry, be happy!) but again, the THC is a chemical compound that's not normally found in our bodies and different reactions will result. Look at what's in Meth-

Here's a list of some chemicals that are commonly used in Meth, from https://www.therecoveryvillage.com/meth-addiction/dangers-methamphetamine-ingredients-made/#gref -
  • Acetone .
  • Anhydrous Ammonia
  • Ephedrine/P
  • seudoephedrine
  • Hydrochloic Acid
  • Lithium Red phosphorus
  • Toluene
  • Sodium Hydroxide or lye
  • Sulphuric Acid

While true, comparing weed to meth is like comparing a cup of sugar to a had grenade. They both have chemicals, but are VERY different.

Granted, sugar has killed more people than weed...and probably hand grenades.

Anyone that pushes you to do something you clearly don't want to is an ass. If he were pushing you to try coffee he'd still be an ass. Has nothing to do with weed.

I had to quit just because moderation isn't something I'm familiar with and I needed to be able to think on a high (no pun) level for work and think quickly. That's not happening if you're stoned. Plus, I didn't want to be around my kids stoned either. I don't even drink around them. Granted, when they go to bed it's party time :)

When was the last time you used pot? Or are you just an expert without experience? I'll reserve your judgement of the "stoners" as probably a bit biased.

Hard core religious types are far more stoned than pot will get you....with much less brain activity.

Jumped to that conclusion kinda fast, eh?

Been a while, for both. I was raised Catholic.......funny, how many 'former Catholics' I run into. A friend said his mom stopped going to church after 80-some years as a devoted Cat'lick and it was because of the way the RC church has handled the pedophilia problem. I don't know why it would be such a surprise- it's one of the only religions that prevents priests marrying and the pedophilia has been going on for a really long time. IMO, any good they do is still far less that the bad they have done.

I may start using smoky treats or Gummy Bears after I retire. Never liked the smoke, so probably not. A friends' wife brought cookies to work one evening and told me she had put some in my jacket pocket. I thought it was so the others wouldn't take them but, apparently, he had given me a wink & a nod, but I never saw it. I was called to work at a bar that night and as I drove, I realized that I was really hungry. I also remembered the cookies, so I ate them. ALL of them. Never thought about what could be in them until it was already too late and at that point, thinking was optional. This was almost 40 years ago and when she mentioned it Sunday night during a boat ride, I gave her a little more crap about it, just for fun.

To be honest, the two best things I have ever done for myself are: stop pot and stop drinking, in that order, chronologically. Should have been reversed, but in any event, I'm better off without either/both and my thoughts on their use are based on my experiences, with the acknowledgement that getting stoned (smoke, eating) is better than getting drunk, for a lot of reasons but I also found that I really like waking up without feeling like I'm coming out of a fog. None of the pot users I know have tried to take over the government, so it's probably better than the drunks we have in DC in that regard, on either side.

Another friends' wife was talking about her mom, who was a Jehovah's Witness. Wouldn't talk to her (friends' wife) after she started smoking and quit going to church. She knew another JH who sounds like a complete drunken slut, but it was OK because she was JH and acted as if she was better than my friends's wife because she still went to church.

OK, then. IMO, anyone who chants as a group, is in a cult.

My problem is moderating my eating. I have managed to cut way back on the meat and pop/soda, but I'm still far too in love with bread, rice and potatoes to ever be skinny, unless I get sick, and at this point, it's a matter of when I guess. When I do go decide to lose weight, it works ok for a while, and then I sort of become obsessed with what I'm going to eat next and began to write notes about it (I have no idea why) and if it's a dud meal, like say something was sub par, but edible, I get all upset and then the next meal becomes even more important. At about the 25 pound point, life is too sucky to continue the diet and I start eating "normally" again. I don't care about booze, drugs, gambling(I do like it once or twice a year at the casino though), smoking, whoring, etc, never really have, so food is my sole vice.

I tried to smoke weed a couple of times when I was a teenager, but as a non-smoker, I simply wasn't able to inhale it without a massive coughing/choking fit. I decided it just wasn't worth the bother for me. And, when I joined the navy (23 years service), it was definitely off limits. At this point in my life, even though it's legal, I simply have no interest in it. If I ever develop a condition that might be alleviated by cannabis, I might consider edibles.

As for alcohol, I'm waaay past the age when quantity was more important than quality. I like craft beer, good wine, good whisky - all in moderation.

As a progressive Christian, I find it amusing/bemusing when athiests say Christians think this, Muslims think that, etc. We aren't all automatons, programmed to think, speak and act the same way. There's certainly no banging on doors and proselytizing.
At my church, we do not say we are right, all other faiths/non-faith are wrong. Everyone has a different perspective on what God(s) is or isn't and that's OK. Even though he is the central figure, we (at least I) don't believe that Jesus was the literal son of God. To believe that automatically renders all other faiths - and non-faith - wrong, which is silly and arrogant. Number one tenet is to be good to each other.
All are welcome, including LGBT2Q+++. Same sex marriage is welcome and conducted.
A few years ago, our minister extended a hand to the mosque across the street from our church. They were so happy to receive us, as many Muslims in North America feel as if they are unwelcome here. Ever since, we have on various occasions, prepared meals for each other and attended each other's services, all in an effort to know and understand one another.

This thread is supposed to be about pot, but I couldn't let this go unchallenged:

There are so many things that many Christians weren't taught to understand about other religions and I'm no expert, but the ones who hate Jews and believe in the idea that Christ is the Son Of God are forgetting a small detail- he was a Jew. He's also called 'King Of The Jews'- they may still believe that the Jews are the cause of many catastrophes, plagues, etc. Still trying to get a handle on Islam- I have read a good amount and I fail to see how their interpretation of the same writings that are the foundation of Judaism and Christianity is the only correct one when it came about over 600 years after Christ. All three religions are considered 'Abrahamic' and even Muslims believe that Christ will go to Heaven on Judgement Day.

I really like being in control of my senses and faculties- much better than being gooned. Last time I had some wine and felt a bit buzzed, I couldn't get un-buzzed fast enough- didn't like it at all.

No, I'm all messed up due to a series of falls in 2007, and I have back issues that came on big about the same time. The back stuff is a family wide thing on my Irish side. My Great Great Great Grandmother came over when she was 12, had 8 kids starting at 14 that lived to reproduce, and ALL of their descendants, except one lucky guy, had back issues, bad ones by 42. I was right on schedule, at 42, when I had a major bout of sciatica, one of many. I'm 2" shorter than I was at 40. Then came the falls. If it hadn't happened to me I wouldn't have believed it was possible to do the damage I did from simply stumbling. I was walking into a gas station, and I took a bad step. My right foot stuck and my foot became a pivot point and I slammed my knee into the sidewalk. It went numb instantly, which was good in a way, as I had no pain from the impact. I tore the hell out of my right shoulder trying to keep my face from slamming the sidewalk, and that did hurt a little(Not nearly what I expected it to) I crushed the Femoral Nerve under my right knee, causing (at first) almost total numbness about 4" above to about 4" below my knee. Along with the knee damage, I tore all my muscles in my thigh, calf, hip, shin, and even my foot! I could not tell if my leg was bent or straight (Except at the extremes) for over 3 years. While it was numb to the max, I fell down dozens and dozens of times, as my right knee wasn't locked up, or if I was tired, it would just fold up. Most of these falls were harmless, but about 3 months after the first fall, I fell in therapy, and I unknowingly partially tore my left quadricep tendon. That hurt very badly. After a short hospital stay for various reasons both related and unrelated to the fall, this is long enough without all that, but it is a good "hospital horror story", I was sent to rehab, where on the third day, after knowing somehow something bad was going to happen, my left knee folded up and I totally tore off my quadricep. Then there was surgery, etc. My left knee is treacherous, it seems to have a mind of it's own and sometimes it just folds up. My right knee is actually more trustworthy than the left one is, and it's not close to being right. Steps over a certain height are downright dangerous and I fall about once or twice a year and expect that will eventually end badly someday. This is my right knee almost 3 weeks after the original fall. The camera I took it with had weak red response and it's MUCH worse than the pic looks: As always the late King never left me alone. He really did love me.

What you can't see is that the bruising is the whole pictured area, it's all bruises. All of it, it just doesn't show because of the junk camera. Here is good ol' Bacon Foot:

My foot looked like that for about 18 months. I had about a quart of clotted blood on the bottom of my right thigh that took forever to go away. Here is my torn up bicep:

Again, the yellow area is actually kind of purple, the purple is almost black, and I could dislocate my arm at will for over a year. I was told I needed surgery, but never had it due to my poor walking and needing my right arm to walk with. But somehow after about 3 years, I regained over 90% of my right arm motion, but my bicep is damaged and has about a 30 pound lift limit on it. Any more and it hurts like hell and tries to tear itself off. A UFC, I think, fighter was doing a forward flip after winning a fight recently, and his foot stuck on landing, and it was a career ending deal, and they showed it in slow motion and I got to see what happened to me clearly for the first time. At least I didn't scream like he did the first time I fell, but the next two times when I fell in therapy, I made up for it. Anyway, I'm severely limited on exercise. And that's my tale of woe..
