PSA S7201 Competitors?

I see these band pass enclosures a lot, but not many folks own one. Being that there are 4 drivers in one box isn't it really an inefficient design? Why not just get four 15" or 18" subs? In that price bracket why not a PB16 Ultra or 2?

Bandpass subs in general, suck. One note fart boxes. IME...

You could buy three or four sealed subs and just stack them. You can get more output for a smaller footprint easily. Its not like it would be any less of an eyesore than this thing.

That's exactly what I was thinking with my previous post. If you're gonna spend it on a big ugly monster, you might as well get 4 ugly monsters for the same price with a lot more output. Not to mention having multiples set up around the room to even things out.

Having dual opposed drivers can reduce the need for extensive bracing, since the drivers cancel each other out inside the cabinet. This is just a dual dual setup. Sort of.

It doesn't reduce the need for bracing, quite the opposite if anything. The internal pressure forces against the enclosure paneling isn't at all lessened. Dual opposed just neutralizes rocking motion of the sub by cancelling out the moving assembly inertia.

Shady straightened me out about the benefit of opposed drivers. I fixed my comment. As for efficiency, yeah, sealed rolls off at a higher frequency than properly tuned ported.

It is not necessarily less efficient, at least compared to other sealed designs. Maybe having the rear side of the driver will lose some surface area contact with the air vs the front, but that probably doesn't do much to lessen efficiency.

This is why I don't understand the attraction people have to gigantic subwoofers. The only exception is some of the ported JTR subs because the neat thing you can do with a huge cabinet is tune it extremely low, which is exactly what Jeff does with his Captivator ULF subs. This sub has no advantage over a regular sealed sub except for having more output, but that advantage can be overcome with multiples. The disadvantages are numerous; you can't move it easily, it is very low on WAF, you lose the response smoothing advantages of multiples, there aren't many places that a behemoth like that could fit, it needs a dedicated circuit, etc. And that is assuming that its amplifier is comfortable with its wiring scheme; if those four drivers are wired in one parallel circuit- yikes! Four subs with four separate amps would be a lot easier on the hardware.

The Captivator ULF subs are some of the lowest extending ported subs that are commercially available. The Captivator 4000 is tuned to 10 Hz I believe.

There's also a rotary sub with a 1Hz - 30Hz +/- 4dB response.

But this is a fan where the signal adjusts the pitch of the vanes of the fan. I'd love to find a video of how it works. The one they show on their "how it works page" doesn't show much really.

It's really cool. I see how it works too. You could stick one of those in your ceiling or wall and you'd be good to go.
