This needs clarification..
Virtually
all AVRs now use fans for cooling, some even have up to (3). They are used primarily for cooling the amplifier's heat sinks, but we have seen them for power transformer cooling and even cooling an overclocked video processor chip.
Many of these AVRs with fans use a responsive, servo system so the fan is started @ a low RPM so not being audible.. Fans are used because they are cheapest method of cooling in todays AVRs which have more channels of amplification and less component overdesign due to intense price competition..
I recall the 1st use of a fan in a receiver was the Marantz 2500 back in 1977 which was rated @250W x 2 full bandwidth in a package weighing < 50lbs..
