Random clicks in Yamaha A1070

Is there a way to check if it has a fan?
PENG raises a point I had not considered. There is no mention of a fan in the user manual.

Just to be quite clear, are these clicks emanating from the actual physical receiver case, or coming through the speakers?

If the sound is coming from the speakers the unit is definitely defective.

If coming from the receiver case, then there may well be a fan. I have not heard of a receiver having a fan, but anything is possible. If there is a fan and it is relay actuated, rather then solid state switching, then a click coming from the receiver would be normal as it switches on and off.
If there is a fan, then you should be able to hear it if you listen right over the receiver.

If the clicks are coming from the receiver case, ask Yamaha if the unit has a relay switched fan, and if so if these clicks are normal.

If this is a fan switching noise, this will be a problem for those receivers. If there is a fan then the switching should have been noiseless solid state, using a relay would have been a bad design choice.

It comes from speakers or speakers and avr. But i did not check avr as it is 16ft from the listening position.

You can email Yamaha, otherwise you have to open up the case to find out and then you risk voiding the warranty. As TLSGuy said, even if there is a fan it should not click randomly and should be solid state controlled.

Over the years Yamaha seemed to have flip flop between putting a fan in one year and not doing so for another year so it is hard to say if there is one in the RX-A1070. From the pictures I could find, the recent year RX-A10X0 receivers don't have a cooling fan.

You really should return it asap while you are well within the return window.

I think PENG left out a not. There should be no random clicks. If you are certain, these clicks, pops should never come from the speakers. That is a very bad omen.

This needs clarification..
Virtually all AVRs now use fans for cooling, some even have up to (3). They are used primarily for cooling the amplifier's heat sinks, but we have seen them for power transformer cooling and even cooling an overclocked video processor chip.

Many of these AVRs with fans use a responsive, servo system so the fan is started @ a low RPM so not being audible.. Fans are used because they are cheapest method of cooling in todays AVRs which have more channels of amplification and less component overdesign due to intense price competition..

I recall the 1st use of a fan in a receiver was the Marantz 2500 back in 1977 which was rated @250W x 2 full bandwidth in a package weighing < 50lbs..

Just my $0.02.. ;)

I left out the word "not", typo, sort of. Thanks for the correction.

If that sort of circuitry was used there would be no clicks at all. You can't use a relay in a system like that.

The AVR in question should not have a design that makes any audible noise during program. If they do, then they should be totally avoided. That would not be acceptable.

Contacted dealer today. They suggested it could be ground issue. But i dont have any hum from transformers. Though avr and amp grounds are not connected rather than inside the sockets. Can it be related? Also suggested to disconnect subs and see if it makes any diff.

I also noticed that recently when i change the volume i cant hear any noises in speakers any more. I definitely heard something before. Did not make any changes to connections.

The dealer is blowing you smoke. That is NOT a grounding issue..

Hi.

Dealer today generated a new theory that it can be some interconnect or hdmi cable issue? Can it be the case? All worked fine with a860 with all other variables the same though.

They agreed to replace avr though. Should get a new one tomorrow.

Well, the most important thing is that the dealer has done the honorable thing and is replacing the AVR.

The dealer's problem though is that he is devoid of logical thinking.

If possible, you should try the replacement in the dealer's show room before accepting it, just in case there is a bad batch of the 1070.

Unfortunately it is not possible((( Dealer is quite far away from me. So all done via phone and internet. They are saying they sold recently a couple of these to other people. Nobody else complained.

In general services seem to be more developed in US than in UK despite the country size differences.

Will hope this one will work.

Reminds me of a situation I was in at a friend's house who had a bluetooth enabled speaker, which I played music thru after pairing my phone with it. Later that night I kept hearing all these beeps from the speaker, even though I had stopped streaming music, and it didn't even occur to me that there was a setting on my phone to make the damn speaker beep everytime I pressed a button/received notifications on the phone (while I was browsing the internet later).

Good luck on replacement unit....

Thank you. Got new avr. Will test it over the weekend...

I guess any brands can have reliability issues, including Yamaha.

Hopefully your new AVR won't be defective.
