Thought so. I am very familiar with them. In fact, my new speakers also has them. But, mine are the 7" Seas Magnesium Drivers. Hope to have them soon. Congrats on the new speakers!

I should have included Walter in that indictment but you guys are all for having very capable surround speakers. Rich acts like he can't just put the ST's behind the couch and not walk back there ... as an experiment ... until they sell.

Well, to be fair, most people don't listen at the levels Walter and I do, or critically listen to program material that has sufficient and purposeful use of the surrounds like TLS does.

Aside from possibly just destroying a cheap pair of surrounds, I do notice a difference with lesser surrounds when you have good surround content.

I'm just now learning first hand what resolution of less than CD grade sounds like on my 2 DM designs. The differences are kind of subtle but exceedingly important. I wonder if you'll feel like that about your upgrade.

No plans for a new center, at present. I'll see how well the SongCenter works.

Older poor quality recordings don't go well with Dennis's designs. I can think of some favorite old LPs from the 60s (Credence Clearwater Revival, for example) that are un-listenable unless I turn the treble down and keep the volume low. (The people responsible for producing those records should be shot.) And that's with various paper mid woofers.

I do wonder if metal mid woofs will make that worse. I've heard various versions of his speakers with magnesium alloy woofers plenty, but it was probably always with very clean recordings. Time will tell. If there is anyone who knows how to keep the mid range flat and noise-free, while maintaining an overall neutral balance, its Dennis Murphy.

Of course with clean digital recordings, their sound is wonderful.

While not in the class of SongTowers, I did migrate my 4 surrounds from KEF Eggs to Aperion Verus Grand Towers.

Frankly, I have to admit I rarely notice a difference. Even in big Bing/Bang/Boom movies, cranked up loud, the fronts and subs are so much louder than the surrounds I'm not sure I can really hear a difference. Fuzz is right about "good surround content", but I find that is much less common than I thought.

The only time it really makes a difference is in All Channel Stereo, when played loud. Since that is probably the least used mode of everything available on my AVR, it doesn't really matter so much to me.

That being said, I still have the towers for surrounds. But if I were starting from zero today, I probably would not.

I'm pretty happy with bookshelf speakers for surround duty. I've seen a lot of this stereo love in some speaker circles. Some of those barbarians don't even use subwoofers. It's true. I've seen it.

Yup, that's definitely something that you have to take into account. Mostly I seek out, through different forum lists (AVS, HT Shack, BD Forum, etc) movies that have good infrasonic/surround content.

For instance, in a movie like Pacific Rim if I watch that in the living room the front sound stage sounds pretty darn good (Phil 3's) and the sub does a decent job on it's own, but with little surrounds I have just do not create an enveloping sound field. Meanwhile, in the basement, when things are coming at you from the left, it sounds like a couple hundred foot Kaiju is coming at you. Same with sounds panning from behind -> overhead-> front.

As with all of this, it's totally subjective so you could sit down in my basement and it could sound exactly (+- a bit) like your system and have no idea what I'm talking about.

You make a good point. Maybe I've become a little spoiled, and certainly don't have the memory of days past. With Phil3s and complementary Center from Dennis up front, 4x Grand Towers for surrounds, a Rythmik FV15HP up front and an SVS PB13U in back, we're pretty enveloped. I really can't say what I would notice if I went back to eggs.

It's new to me. It's actually a good idea.

Jim did tell me I should expect about 2 months for them to be completed. Those 5 coats of lacquer take time. So I must keep telling myself, "don't look at the tracker more than once a day".

The impossibly 'you can never replicate this' perfect finish on the ST's ranks my own efforts as nice tries. But lacquer is the finish itself, huh? I remember you talking about sealing the inside of the panels. I bet that goes a long way in keeping the, what looks like mitered veneer panels stable.
