All you really need is to hook em up to an amp, and feed the amp with the sub output(s) of an AVR.

Well that would be cost effective...but I doubt the 28hz is a -3 number.

I'm thinking sealed 15" with external amplification. I'd need a driver that will work in this cabinet size or smaller...for cheap!

Then build a slightly taller cabinet and put both drivers in it with a 2 ch plate amp and tweak the dsp to your liking!

No but I am eventually going to pick your brain in regards to 18's. This summer I may be able to build a custom enclosure, in place, for the Aurasound NS18. Deeply considering it...

Define cheap Also, just how well constructed are the cabs in question, i.e. how likely is it that the baffle will disintegrate if you try to drop in a 30-40 pound subwoofer driver? Would the grills provide adequate clearance for something with a bit more throw than the stock unit?

The aura is a great sub. At the current sale price, I think it's tough to beat. The UXL can get you a huge chunk of that performance for about half the price, but the Aura does a lot of things really well. I remember when I was choosing between the LMS and the Aura. I ended up with the LMS and then by extension the UXL and by extension the FTW sometime soon. However I've always been curious about the Aura and if I wasn't already committed to the FTW is be seriously looking at the Aura given the current sale.

For me, the big drawback to the aura is and has been the price. At minimum I'd want 2, which prior to the current sale had put it a touch over what I wanted to spend. I've never been dissatisfied with the LMS though, nor the UXL's so the urge to explore the Aura has waned significantly. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts though.

They are fairly solid bit without seeing the insides who knows. I'm sure the baffle will need support even if it is fairly beefy for the day.

If it isn't easy I'll leave them alone. Just an idea to look into for fun.

Well as it is, by my reckoning you've got a little over 2 cubic feet worth of internal volume per cabinet. This could work fairly well, achieving a Qtc of 0.707 in a bit under 2 cubic feet, leaving some room for additional bracing. If I were inclined to get my hands dirty, I'd gut the cabinet, brace as needed, and install a new double-thick baffle, which would allow you to recess the driver a bit to achieve adequate clearance with the grill. With some signal shaping, it could turn out reasonably well.

This could work fairly well, achieving a Qtc of 0.707 in a bit under 2 cubic feet, leaving some room for additional bracing. If I were inclined to get my hands dirty, I'd gut the cabinet, brace as needed, and install a new double-thick baffle, which would allow you to recess the driver a bit to achieve adequate clearance with the grill. With some signal shaping, it could turn out reasonably well.

The other option for these would be to put Dennis Murphy into the insane asylum by having him make new crossovers for them as they are. :-D

Unfortunately, that's probably not worth the effort either. Even with an XO upgrade, the design itself has some fundamental flaws. As far as I can ascertain by images on the web, the center to center spacing on those tweeters is about 4 inches, which equates to 1 wavelength at ~3250Hz. This pretty much ensures acoustical interference through their passband. The extended edges of the enclosure would also contribute significantly to diffraction, muddying things up further. I don't think it's overstating anything to say that even with upgrades, Dennis' $190 upgraded Daytons would represent a more accurate loudspeaker.

That's why he'd be in an asylum! these things are a hot mess and why I'd consider moding them into subs if it was quick and easy. If not they can sit in the elephant speaker graveyard (room over my garage). I believe there are only six pairs of vintage speakers up there...and one center channel...oh and some outdoor speakers...
