Morning news listed some new laws around the country for 2016. This one blows me away.

In California, you can report that you think a relative, who is a gun owner, is dangerous, and the feds can "temporarily" confiscate his firearms.

I wonder if next is one that lets me report a relative as ignorant, and the feds "temporarily" take away his right to vote? Any other new laws you like? Don't like?

Learning from Germany and ISIS controlled territory. Doesn't seem to work in Chicago's south side though.

I do have a problem with this indiscriminate civil forfeiture.

I'm not positive, but I think a family down the street might be Jewish...

You'd think with all of the history videos on YouTube, people would have at least a chance of learning from it. Maybe if we had cats reenact history in their videos, every one on the planet would have it memorized. :D

Wow! LOTS of grey in that statement. Without any checks and balances, depending on what it is actually about, I can hate this rule or love it! How long will they confiscate? Are there any requirements for validating that he is dangerous? Can I just say he has a weird look in his eyes sometimes?:p

I have a relative with an AK-47. He does not need a weapon which is more potent than what law enforcement carries. When he drinks too much, he gets aggressive... I could see him killing his best friend over an argument (he'd probably just use his pistol for that one) and taking on any response showing aggression towards him. He'd feel horrible about it the next morning, but "in the moment" is a different story. I believe people like him are not as rare as we would like them to be.

I don't think this rule would help at all in his case.

This same fear mongering bullshit story has circulated since 2013. There was nothing to it then, and nothing to it now.

Googling for the new 2016 CA gun law brings this up, not that

A new California law meant to boost gun safety, especially for teenagers and law enforcement, goes into effect on Jan. 1.

SB 199 requires BB and airsoft guns sold in the state to include fluorescent markings to distinguish them from real firearms. It was authored by Sen. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles.

In several high-profile cases, police have shot teenagers after mistaking the toy guns the teens were carrying for real ones. In one case, a 13-year-old Santa Rosa boy was shot seven times by Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies after they mistook the airsoft gun the teen was carrying for an AK-47.

Now, I happen to think that's a good idea. However...say you're a person with a real gun. What would be so hard to make it look like fake one? In fact, I can see someone putting up a website selling customized decals - orange, yellow, fluorescent, otherwise - and other things you can add to a gun to make it look like anything but the real thing.

Well... here it is in the LA Times... that bastion of conservative BS and fear mongering...
http://www.latimes.com/local/political/la-me-pc-california-jerry-brown-gun-seizures-20140929-story.html

"The legislation approved by the governor allows law enforcement officers or family members to ask a court for a restraining order against a person believed to be a threat, barring his or her possession of firearms for 21 days."

And from Nancy Skinner who co-introduced the bill, "AB 1014 provides an effective tool to get guns out of the hands of loved ones".

Edit: Apology accepted.

Apology for what? I was criticizing the story, not you, so relax. Your own link was from 2014 and has nothing to do with "new laws in 2016" now does it? Nothing new to rile folks up, so might as well recycle an old one and change the date. Cute.

My whole family owns guns, and frankly we're sick and tired of the propaganda campaign from the NRA faction. I personally wish this sort of crap would remain down there in the right wing blogosphere/echochamber/chain email nether regions of the internet where it belongs, not here on an ostensibly reality based audio site.

What in the literal **** is that going to help with. ISIS uses families to commit these crimes, do they really think they're going to rat on each other. Absolutely insane and asinine logic. Once again, a law that does nothing to stop real threats.
