Not big fan of DAS like Fuzz linked above. I prefer NAS. If you have old PC lying around just fix it to be Freenas box or if not much pc experience get one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-ReadyNAS-Diskless-Attached-RN10400-100NAS/dp/B00BNI4CVG/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422403613&sr=1-8&keywords=Synology+4-Bay+Network+Attached+Storage
Only a bit pricier than icydock DAS, but you get the benefit of low power 24/7 server.
As for drives - it's a touchy subject - 1) don't get Seagate. HGST would be preferred. WD close second.

If you have the budget get the 8 bay nas and run Raid6

Will a NAS like the 4 bay diskless even work for me as a one home user on a normal desktop PC?

Besides a pc desktop do you have a tv screen? Do you have a tablet?

I do have a Insignia 40" TV. The model is NS-40D510NA15. I have a Blu-ray player and that is a Sony BDPS3200. I have an Integra DTM 5.9 stereo receiver with a pair of B&W 686 speakers. No to the tablet. I have an iPhone 5S with Verizon and the iPhone is still being paid off under the Verizon Edge and I qualified for the Edge so I financed the phone.

1) TV - don't you want to watch all these movies on your TV without thinking if you have your PC on or not at the time. Plus NAS takes much less power, so running NAS 24/7 is much cheaper than running your desktop pc 24/7
TV does not have smart features, but your BluRay does support DLNA playback of MKVs
2) With Plex Sync (unfortunately subscription only feature) you could sync movies to your phone and watch it on the go. it's pretty easy to do. This nas does support installation of Plex server negatively but with limitation on video trans-coding as it is very cpu intensive process.

Yes, I would love to watch these on my TV 24/7 and not on my PC.

What is everything I would need to watch these movies on my TV?

I would rather and prefer to watch on my TV not on my phone.

You would need a upnp/dlna services. I believe that you could setup Windows Media Player to work as such or use 3rd party software on your desktop .

Alternatively you could use dlna service on the nas box.

If you don't like this setup, you may want to look for alternative media client. I like amazon fire stick.

With setting up windows media player than that would be for my pc not my tv, right? How would I set this up with windows media player to playback movies on my tv with upnp/dlna services?

And I do not have a blu-ray reader/writer in my pc. I would prefer an external one over internal because it would be a whole another level of a simple task for most to install one internal and for me its like learning rocket science. It would be easier for me to plug via usb and call it a day.

I watched "most" of the YouTube video for DLNA but it does not apply to me because I am not connected to any networks at all for me to connect to a DLNA server.
Well, i guess we were all wasting our breath and you are trolling us.
Just in case you don't, only other option is to copy ripped movies to external USB HD and plug-in it to your bd playing. Not very elegant solution but it should work.
Sneakernet f4w. 4tb drive should hold plenty of movies and pray to God for usb3.0 port and drive as it would take forever to copy to usb2

I was not trolling anyone not at all. I thought this could be done without me being on a network

Just to be clear, by network i don't mean Internet. I mean local network, which could be even wireless. Only other option is an external hard drive and running around to update it

I do have a wireless router but I have that hard wired to my Internet cable modem and I do not have a wireless card in my PC, and I just use my iPhone to connect to the WiFi but that could only be done at my location which I cannot connect to my WiFi if I go down the street.

Your bd player should support wifi.
So you do have existing network. Ether it's wireless or wired - it's same network

Does that mean i could use a plex server and upnp/dlna?
Yes, if you can figure it out. Plex might not be necessary right now, but you may want it later. For basic function all youd need now is to make sure that your bd player is connected to wifi and set up dlna as i mentioned before

I watched that first DLNA YouTube video again, but I am a bit confused because my TV network would appear on my PC under which ever settings he specified, but in my case I do not know how to set it up from the very basic.
