Yamaha RXV-2600 Lacks real Sub Power!!!!

I purchased my Yamaha 2600 about 3 weeks now thinking I was going to upgrade my Sony STRDA555ES receiver... So Far BIG Mistake... The Yamaha is a Video Technically Supreior machine, producing ALL the VIDEO Gimmics you would ever need... However, when it comes to the Sound, they obviously didn't put in the same effort... The Sub sounds being produced is very weak .. you have to turn up the volume quite a bit to get decent Subwoofer sound.. by then, your fronts and surround speakers are already too high.... I compare the Audio portion to my previous Sony model.. and HANDS DOWN!!! Sony Blows it away... I am using the receiver to push the Dual 12" sub.. and it can barely do it.." SAWX900 Sub".. With the Yamaha receiver, I have to now turn up the volume on my sub almost all the way, also the Crossover ferquency has to be maxed out on the sub to get the signals going to it.... With my Sony STRDA555ES, I turned up the sub to only Less that Half way, and the Crossover frequency only mid way.. and it was just awsesome sub even at LOW volume.. My floor use to rumble.. havent had that feeling since I hooked up the Yamaha...

Playing the Yamaha in straight direct mode is a Total Waste.. it only plays thru the front 2 speakers and absolutely NO subwoofer sound.. even though I selected "BOTH " to output subwoofer sound...

I already returned one because there was no Sub sound coming from their Optical connections except for the DTV port... This was confirmed by the store when I brought it back.. they tested it.. and I was right.. so they gave me another one.. Now this one plays SUB from all the ports.. Just Not up to par..

Overall.. Very happy with the Videeo features, BUT VERY VERY VERY Dissapointed in the Audio segment...

I am hoping to see a review of this unit by the Professionals on this site, to see If I'm just off my rockers...

I would have returned this unit, if I bought it from a Big store, but because it came from a small store and they already exchanged one with me.. I will communicate with Yamaha (if there is a point) and live with it.. last resort, I could just hook up back my Sony and enjoy the rumble again.. Just a shame to spend the money for something nothing more than a Video Machine...

I think you need to calibrate your receiver. Audioholics has an article describing the process. Basically what you need to do is adjust the output levels on the receiver so that the amount of sound produced at each speaker is consistent at a specific volume level (reference level).

I used to have the 2500 and had similar thoughts about the bass. You need to set your sub to LFE + L/R and it will reinforce the bass a bit or at least that is what made it sound much better with mine.

The above recommendation automatically sets your mains to LARGE. One must be certain their mains can handle this. A SMALL setting for all speakers with the sub setting to SWFR is the best place to start, with a proper crossover setting.

You probably need to enage "Source Direct" which gives you subwoofer output on 2-channel input with speakers set to small. I just benched the RX-V2600 and will have the review out in February. It has a great amp and is improved over both the RX-V2400 and RX-V2500.

Maybe they changed the name from STRAIGHT to SOURCE DIRECT, but on my RX-V1400, I always leave it on STRAIGHT and that will send 2-channel audio to the fronts and sub and my set crossover.

No Need...

Did the Auto Setup.. still not up to PAR with my Sony.. Did the Manual setup and adjusted LFE and Surround speakers.. Played with Large and Small speaker settings.. still no good... My Front speakers are Cerwin Vegas 15" VS15 Series.. My Surround speakers are JBL Northridge series, My Sub is a Dual 12" Sony sub SAWX900... All of these use to sound just perfect.. now.. it does NOT... I don't expect any assistance from you (Rocky), I will wait for other members with valuable suggestions,or the professionals to review the receiver and report.. For me.. I will try some more to get the receiver working, however, Given the Technology built into this receiver, I should NOT have to do alot of work to get GREAT Sound..
Still Disappointed!!!

If you're thinking why did I decide to upgrade the Sony?.. I was having a problem with it , when I turn it on, after the first 3 minutes, it would shut off.. then I power it back on, and it was fine forever... I just got tired of powering it off / on.. So, rather than fixing it, I thought it was a good opportunity to upgrade.. I was tossed between the STRDA7100ES and the Yamaha RXV-2600... early indications, I may have chosen wrong for my Audio needs...

at what level do you have your LFE and front channels? perhaps the auto setup put your subs level in the negative.

does your sub have its own level control?

How do your VS15's sound in stereo, with the subwoofer turned off? CV's are very efficient speakers, and I can't imagine the 2600 not being able to drive them to reference levels.

sorry if i offended you. anyways, how are the adjustments at the rear of the subs? maybe they are too low

My friend I do hope you get your yamaha working right. I understand that you was torn between the sony es and the yamaha. But IMHO you did pick a better receiver than the sony!! I am sure that it is probably an incorrect speaker setting. when I had my rxv-440 i had large towers and the center and surround was small. and bass either set to "sub" or "both" and it sounded very good but i did not like the fixed 90Hz crossover for the sub. so try to play with your settings and see if you get your bass working right.

Actually my normal levels for the volume is less than half, but because I'm trying anything to get it to sound the way it should, I have Maxed them out.. Both the Volume and the Crossover are maxed to the right...

Thanks

In Stereo they sound great except, with my current yamaha setup, I just hear Mid - High frequency.. No low Frequency coming from them in Pure Direct or 2 Channel Stereo mode..

Thanks

I Did Try setting my speaker to Both SMALL and LARGE, and Subwoofer to Both.. Receiver Crossover is set at 80Hrz.. Just not sounding right..

I can't understand why setting my front speakers to SMALL would help given they are 15" Series...

When I run the Auto Setup program, it sets my Front Speakers at Large, my Center as Small, and My Surround as Large..

Once I save the setting and try the various DSP's .. it sound very disappointing..

Correct the Auto Setup did assign -6db for my SUB, But I have since changed that to +10db and my Fronts to +7.5db and set Bass Out to Both, and the receiver Crossover Frequency to 80hrz(THX)...

Yes My sub does have its own level control, and I have since Maxed it out to see if anything would help..

Don't get me wrong, I do hear Sub Sounds.. Just Not Half what I was used to...

Thanks

You most certainly must have something wrong with your setup. I have the 2600 and in a 13.5x25 foot room I can achieve over 106db's sustained with peaks being much higher. The 2600 is a very powerful receiver and I have no issues with it driving my two velodynes at all. My sub level is at -6 and speaker levels range from -2 to +4. Make sure you don't have the night mode engaged , the dynamic range compression on, or the LFE level set to -10. Recheck all your wiring as well, because either you have got something wrong somewhere or you have a bad receiver and should return it for another one.

I am really hoping the problem is my setting somewhere.. Already returned a defective one.. I really dont want to have to return a second one...

I will check the Dynamic Range compression, not sure what Auto Setup would have set it as... If its on I will set it to OFF...

Yes, you really need serious setting for each of your speakers in sound level, EQ freq ...etc... :)
