Yamaha Presence vs Atmos - Physical Placement

Here's my confusion with the setup.

I understand they're different implementations, but it seems like from everything I read, you can use Yamaha's Presence placement (2 front height and 2 rear height) to play atmos tracks, even though atmos 'official' placement guidelines is to place speakers in the ceiling?

Based on Audioholic's old yamaha A2040 review, he basically used the yamaha presence setup for atmos yes?

Yes I’m using front and rear height speakers for Atmos on my Yamaha RXA2060 and it works great.

Basically yes, you can use those locations but IIRC Yamaha has them placed outside of the mains. You will get better results by placing them in line with the mains or slightly inside of them depending on room configuration, and also go as high as you can, considering a normal 8-10’ ceiling.

I use front and back heights in a non Atmos Yamaha hey it does sound pretty decent for what it is I get a lot of overhead content from it . It’s enough to interest me in the real Atmos version .

Front Presence speakers placed high up on the front wall are acceptable for Atmos and preferable to up firing speakers.

What is your Yamaha receiver model?

I've got a 2013 Yamaha rx-v673 driving the following:

Polk S35 center
Polk s10 L/R
4 JBL sat 200s as front presence and wall mounted surrounds 2 ft above my head and slightly behind.
Polk psw10 subwoofer

Small speakers but work great for my space.

Yes like in the manual for RXA2060. Nine speakers plus 1 sub. 5.1.4

Follow the dolby spec and not some manufacturers manual.
Almost nobody has front and rear heights that is per spec.

My future home theater has only the rear atmos on the back wall being in spec. If I did the front wall. It will leave a major hole of sound above.

People just don't get the message to use angles from listening position to determine the speaker locations instead they blindly guessing.

I'm sure Yamaha says front presence works for Atmos because it's a selling point. Since my 7.1 setup currently includes front presence and that's likely how it will remain, I've been hoping someone could tell me that they have the same setup and Atmos sounds awesome.

I hope to upgrade to an Atmos Yamaha sooner or later and even if the Atmos effects are mild, it'd still be a welcome change.

That said, those who experience front presence awesomeness, please let me know.

Yes it’s great. I do have a set of 4 in-ceiling speakers for someday but I never installed those. For now having 4 presence speakers works awesome.

Nobody is interested in your fantasy “Future” Home theater. If Dolby has no issue with using up firing “modules,” nobody should be all that concerned with wall mounted Presence speakers used for Atmos.

Some get hyper focused on height speaker placement in rooms that aren’t fit for home theater in the first place. If the f#%kers are on a wall, then the f#%kers are on the wall. Enjoy them. If you are in your parents’ basement using a boom box for home theater, you can just shut the f#%k up.

Btw, does Dolby Surround upmix to those presence speakers when playing 2 or 5.1 channel content? Thanks.

Apologies to all. I stopped ignoring some posters in settings and realize now I should have left well enough alone. That setting is there for a reason and I think I can make better use of my time than to reply to idiots quoting my posts.
