Yamaha CX-A5100 zone out

I am having a headach trying to figure out how to get ANY zone to function properly. I have a Nakamichi rx-505 that I want to use to record anything I listen to. I do not have a second amp. what is an inexpensive way to accomplish this with a very good 2nd amp to convert the signal back to my Nak 505?

What are you using to output to the NAK? I assume it is that receiver. Your post makes zero sense at the moment.

Look at you Yamaha manual starting on page 98, which describes how to use the zones. However AV receivers are not really designed to be used with tape recorders and cassette decks. So it will be awkward.

Zones are not the same as tape/processor loops as you seem to think. Zones are output only....were you thinking of outputting zone 2 into a zone 1 input to do some recording?

If these signals arrive at the CXA5100 through digital cords (HDMI, Coax, Optical Toslink) then they likely won't get converted to the Zone out analog ports unless you specifically select the mode called "Main Zone Sync". At least that's how I think it works. Whatever you select to listen to in the main room also is routed to the zone out in this mode even if it didn't arrive as an analog signal. There may also be limitations based on the format and the Zone out level needs to be turned up adequately.



Also I'm not sure if in the zone out control section you may need to set Zone 2 and 3 separately.

That is probably the best way to do it. The manual is unclear about what you can output from the zones. If you select an input and output to zone 2 with the recorder connected to zone 2 it will work or not. If it does not work you will have to use the headphone output. AV receivers have not been designed to work with tape decks. If you are serious about recording then you really need a vintage receiver with a tape loop.

Unless your zone 3 is fixed output intended for another pre-amp to control volume, I'd assume it is simply a zone with adjustable volume so setting appropriate output/volume level for your recorder might need some playing with. Have you tried connecting the zone 3 to your recorder with some rca cables to see what results you get?

Info on the Zones is found on Pgs. 96-100, and on Pg. 176 of the manual.

Assuming you have everything connected via HDMI: If I understand the chart on P. 176 correctly, main-zone HDMI inputs will be downmixed to stereo for the Zone 4 RCA outputs.

If all else fails, you can get a HDMI to 5.1 analog converter and connect it to the 5100’s HDMI Zone 2 output.

The Zone 2 HDMI out delivers a discrete signal output signal, totally separate from the HDMI ARC output.

In addition to 5.1, the converter has a setting for 2-channel. It will downmix the HDMI’s 5.1 signal to 2 channels that you can connect via RCA cables to your Nakamachi.

However, how listenable the downmixed recordings will be is anyone’s guess. Hopefully it is as good as what the headphone jacks deliver.
