Some people be leave thats the truth with wine. This is not the case unfortunately. Usually bigger reds like Cab's and Syrahs, have more sulfite's then Pinot's. So those 200 dollar bottles of Opus One are more likely to give you a big *** headache then a nice 15 dollar Chardonay. White wine is the most friendly of the bunch.
As far as high end liquor go's some of the new super vodkas are supposed to be pretty friendly because they are distilled like 3 times. There is some truth to your statement.
Here's some clarity,

My family's been in the business(licquor) since 1970, I've been collecting wine for about 15 years, sulfites give you a headache only if you're allergic (it's a natural by product of the process of making wine) so ther'es no difference between a Cab, Merlot, or Pinot or the fifteen dollar bottle of wine. As far as different levels of distilling spirits (especially Vodkas) it's pure marketing,(my best friend's dad is the VP of the world's largest wine and licquor distributor , they're based here in Miami, we've talked at great length about triple filtering, one filtering level is enough to remove any impurity that might make you sick, anything beyond that is pure marketing) you can thank SKY vodka for that one. Your headache comes from excessive blood alcohol (it constricts the blood vessels in your brain) and your liver's inability to process it. If you over indulge on that fifteen dollar bottle of wine your headache will just be as nasty that if you over-indulge on that one hundred and fifty dollar Opus. If your sensitive or are outright allergic to sulfites then you must watch your intake no matter what type of grape the wine is made from. Sky, Finlandia, Absolut, Stoli, Belvedere,Grey Goose, Chopin will produce the same nasty hang over if abused, don't be fooled by the marketing hype, don't think you can over-indulge if a vodka claims to triple distilling. I hope this helps.:)

I am one of those who get a very sharp headache shortly after having a glass of wine. Thankfully, I think wine tastes horrible so this isn't anything I have to try to "cure". :D

I saw a show on the History Channel that mentioned something about 'lower grade' alcohols being made with crappier quality ingredients and that being a contributing factor to some people getting a bigger hangover from drinking it. I don't recall the exact details.

I've found that drinking water before I go to bed and when I get up helps quite a bit. If its bad I usually run for 15-20 minutes on the elliptical machine. Nothing I've found cure a bad hangover like some water and just sweating out the toxins (ugh, it's stanky sweat too  ).

Sheep, Wait til your a bit older. I don't think I ever had a hangover until I was in my late 20's. It:p 's amazing what age will do to you.

Nope, what would price have to do with it? 'Better' whiskey might mean higher alcohol content; eg Jack Daniels is 90 proof but Jim Beam is 80 proof. They are both bourbon, which one is better? In my opinion, Beam but I'll drink either. If you drink too much you'll get sick regardless of which one you drink.
Jack Daniels is not burbon, tasty...yes, but not burbon.
It' a Tennessee "sipping" Whiskey. All burbons come from
Kentucky.

...not only isn't a bourbon (just like California blanc de blanc isn't Champagne) "Old No.7" hasn't been 90 proof for quite some time now...it used to be when they also had Jack Daniel's green label which was 80 or 84, I forget...when they dropped the proof I switched to Wild Turkey 101...Now the only 90 proof brown goods Mr. Motlow's boys sell is the premium-priced single barrel stuff...

But since I stopped drinking, hangovers aren't the problem...reality is...

Best hangover cure: don't drink...

Second best: stay drunk...

jimHJJ(...problem is more often than not I would opt for second best...)

Hey Mikey,

You might be sensitive to sulfides, I grew up around wine and liquor due to my parent's business, I was never a heavy drinker, my mom doesn't like it at all, my dad is a tea-toadler. It's never good to over-indulge on alcohol (although Sheep might say different;) .)

I agree with "Don't get drunk!"
Last time I got drunk, I got sick, and called europe on the porcelin phone!
I promised myself that I'd never get in that condition again, and I haven't.
That was in 1972.............

Third best: Three Excedrin followed by two more half an hour later. All five with lots of water.

And don't forget to air out the car. Those empty White Castle sacks sure do stink in the noonday sun.

I've had a hangover, but it took a lot of booze, and I don't have that kind of money. A 12 case is good enough for me for an evening. The problem is the beer gut. It's to stinkin' cold to run right now, and I need to start working out more.

Oh its on like donkey kong!!!
Just agree with me on this, white wine has less sulfite's then red wine.

Perhaps the vodka's may be a farce, I have never met a vodka maker.

Well if you're going to get mad I guess I'll agree:D , but more or less won't make a difference, if you're sensitive any amount will be "uncomfortable". I have not met a vodka maker either, but the gentleman in question has, Finlandia, when his company ditributed it and Absolut which they're sole distributors of. He's also traveled eastern Europe extensively (birth place of vodka)and has met with the various producers that sprang up after the fall of the iron curtain.:)

Donkey Kong? Never drank it?;) Must give some kick!

Foam,
You might be developing a sensitivity to sulfites, personally I can only handle about 2 glasses of wine, three with dinner, beyond that I will wake up with a headache. The best bet if you're going to drink, don't drink on an empty stomach.

According to:

AT Bakalinsky, sulfites,Wine and Health, Waterhouse&RM Rantz, Eds., American Society for Enology and Viticulture, Davis, 1996.

"sulfites do not cause headaches, another unknown component is culprit"

Paraphrased, We stand corrected. There's another culprit, not sulfites.

Throughout the article it's stressed NOT to drink on an empty stomach.

(Mtry, you've got to be proud);)

This goes hand in hand with "What's your favorite brew" thread.

Here's mine: 2 x-tra strength aspirins and 16 0z. of H2O--no headache in the morning.

Actually I'm trying it right now!
No No No. You guys have it all wrong. After drinking this is the best way to soak up brews, or drinks.

This is insane. My favorite burger and I can't get it here in Miami. This photo is torture, please take it down.

I'm relegated to eating the frozen ones from Publix.

Well yes I did.

You see where I am from. Torture for me too. :(
