I was a big fan of DTS before I bought my ONKYO 702 with THX cerification. But I like better than DTS is DD EX or the THX cin/surround. I feal DTS is clear sounding but DD EX seems to bring I think more life along with the THX.

DTS ES is where it's at. As far as I'm concerned, nothing beats DTS. Isn't that why it was chosen as the de facto standard for the next generation of DVD?

Yeah, chosen as one of a half dozen standards. But DTS could get flattened by lossless codecs in the next generation. The new formats will have enough space for a true HD picture coupled with a full-quality DVD-A/SACD-level soundtrack.

DTS okay, but not compared to Redbook or DVD-A. It will be technically possible soon to dispense of lossy codecs like that, if the studios want to go that route...

DTS is clearly the best for movies. It doesn't seem to work quite as well as Dolby Digital for concert videos. I only have 5 or 6, so my sample size is small, but DD works better for those.

Wow,i think all my DTS cd's are way better then any of my DVD-A and SACD's.

If I had to pick it would be DVD-A and SACD over DTS. Don't get me wrong I own a few DTS discs, they just lack the depth and dynamic range you get from the others. Also most DTS discs I have seen are in the $24 price range. A bit steep if you ask me.

For movies I really like DTS-ES, it is just a shame there are not more available.

Ew, SACD and DVD-A are definately not up to par with the 6.1 MTX AND DSC that DTS Offers, even 5.1 dts blows pretty much everything out of the water. I haven't realy fiddled much with my receiver because dts just sounded great but I think I might try the DD-EX seeing as how my reciever plays that format and I would think it would be supported by all dvds that use DD 5.1? Am I correct? Or are only certain movies using DD-Ex

My favourite DVD for sound quality is Star Trek Nemesis (Dolby Digital).

I think DTS is a bit of a bloater. Its large bit-rate prevents DVD's including extras such as isolated music scores and additional commentaries. I quote from this document "Dolby Digital, DTS and DVD: A History", by Adam Barratt (http://www.spannerworks.net/reference/10_1a.asp).

"Up to this point DTS has relied on its reputation as the best sounding 5.1-channel system available in the home for its survival, while Dolby Laboratories, secure in their format's future have felt little need to dispute DTS's claims. However, following the DVD Forum's adoption of the Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) system as the future DVD-Audio standard, DTS's claim to be the best sounding 5.1 system may be short-lived. The MLP system, as the name suggests, uses 'lossless compression' to allow, among other variations, true 24-bit PCM audio to be stored in the same space currently needed for conventional uncompressed 16-bit linear PCM: no perceptual coding of any kind is needed. The next-generation blue-laser (or higher wavelength) DVD system could well use the six-channel 24-bit 96kHz MLP configuration to provide ultra-high-fidelity uncompressed home theatre audio on blue-laser DVD-Video discs."

As posted in an earlier thread... "It's a heck of a list!" How can you argue with DTS with so many multi-million dollar films using it?
