Donald Fagen - The Nightfly (whole album).

I just got this gem in the mail. Personally, I already prefer it to 'Two Against Nature' and 'Everything Must Go'. The harmonies are absolutely magical. You should be listening to this too!

IMO Nightfly is Donald Fagens best work and I actually consider it to be Steely Dan music just b/c its so damn good! That album was and still is ahead of its time ;)

Been listening to some of Wagner's Ride of the Valkries. Good stuff! Now on to some Rush-Moving Pictures.

Bootlegged (read:downloaded off file sharing) versions of 'The Second Arrangement' by Steely Dan. It was supposed to be on Gaucho, but an idiodic assistant studio engineer erased most of the good take. Too bad, because it really is a cool song.

Clutch rocks.

How would you compare it to their self titled release ("Clutch," obviously)? In my opinion, that's their best work so far, but I haven't heard Blast Tyrant yet. I will have to check it out.

The Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me

Been listening to the Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me in DVD-A. Besides being one of their best albums, IMHO, it's absolutely amazing how damn good this album sounds on DVD-A. For those of us old guys, who heard the new stuff first on vinyl, this is a revelation. Been buying up a bunch of DVD-A & SACD remixes, and for the most part, they are fabulous.

However, have any of you found the remixes to alter the music to the point that it's distracting? i.e., on the SACD surround remix of Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, several of the songs no longer have the same instrumental sound, because the piano is now mixed forward, and the synths mixed way in the background, when on the original stereo mix, the synths were prominent, while the piano was way in the background. Not that it's a bad thing, but it changes the entire "flavor" of the song.

Comments please??

Thanks,

Pat

I have yet to see Fleetwood Mac's Rumours DVD-A mentioned in these kind of topics. I must say there is quite a handful of reference material on this disc.

Recently, I have been spending a fair amount of time listening to Mahler's Symphony No. 3. (Tilson Thomas / San Fransisco Symphony SACD) I believe it received a Grammy for best Classical Album this year.

Michael Franks...

...Sleeping Gypsies.

Great lyrics and supporting musicians (Brecker, Carlton, Sanborn, Sample),
and one of the cleverist/funniest tunes ever recorded (Me 'bwana he no home). Recording amazingly good for a 70's analog...would love to hear
it in DVD-A. His best IMO.

Just bought Nightfly DVD-A...can't wait to listen. Here-here to Grusin/
Mountain Dance comment. Sounds great on my Polk LSi-15's. Another
good candidate for DVD-A. Don't know if that's possible considering
the unique way Mountain Dance was recorded.

Blues for Christmas

Jimmy Hall's Rendezvous with the Blues is on my car player. Listening to Santana's Shaman on DVD-A. Herbie Hancock's Gershwin's World on SACD. Both Santana and Hancock purchased to test new Denon 2910. Both albums sound great in 5.1. I'm not a huge fan of either artist, though I like many of the cuts on both albums.

Paul Thorn's Are You With Me is a nice break from the usual.

And, just saw Aaron Neville with his Quintet (brother Charles on sax, Earl Smith, jr on drums, Michael Goods-keyboards, Shane Theriot-guitar, David Johnson-bass) at the Laurie Auditorium concert hall at Trinity Univ here in San Antonio. The sound was great, the audience was attentive, and Neville displayed his unique voice over a range of music from oldies, to sacred, to New Orleans funk.

Katy Lied - Steely Dan. I'll have to agree with 20to20k, Nightfly is a great album. Lemme know how the DVD-A is. Also a lover of Mountain Dance, though CD is probably the best you can get, because of the fact that it was 2-track digital (and I would assume, at the CD-Bit and a Sample rate).
