Use Old AVR as a Pre Amp??

I have a perfectly fine Sony STR DH-590 that I'm replacing with a Yamaha RX-V6A to upgrade from a 5.1 to a 7.1 system. I'll be using Dayton Audi MK442's for the front and rear surrounds and MK402's for side surrounds. Can the Sony be used as a preamp for this setup or not necessary or even beneficial?

It does not have pre amp outputs, so no.

The Yamaha's pre-amp section should be fine on its own....aside from the difficulty in using the Sony in that way as Peng mentioned :) Use it for a second system.....
