From what I’ve read and have read into the op’s remarks this unit is not calabrated at least with his new equipment installed and may be running on older settings or mabey no calibration as he misplaced his mic . From the looks of his room and gear should sound really good when setup properly .
And yes, for sure setup should be run properly for the best results. That's a biggie too.

His front mains are running real hot +5 and +7 on the center there’s no way that can be accurate. He’ll see big changes when he gets his mic and does a full blown calibration ypao does two things really well that’s distance ( delays) and levels. He’ll have a sweet room once he gets it dialed in .

I should stop skimming posts because I did miss that he didn't use a mic or run setup...

Still tho, I think comparing a surround mode to an all channel mode is a flawed method. All channel would definitely come across as much louder. Enough of a difference I could see "muffled" being tossed in there to describe the difference. You could be listening to the same sound on 1 speaker vs 9 speakers.

-10 on mine my neighbors think it’s storming outside lol !
It depends on what it is. -10 for most of my music or say, youtube is quite loud and not a good idea for any length of time, but for some movies I find myself going as loud as -5 during quieter scenes for clear dialogue. It's a huge difference, but depends on what source and material.

Agreed all channel stereo on any avr would or should sound louder for sure especially running his mains that hot and indeed I can imagine his surrounds sound muffled with them not level matched .
Now with that being said there are settings in Yamaha’s 9 channel that you can set to make it sound Farley good with all channel you can shift the image front to back , raise the height on the center there basically delays there’s two different menus you’ve got to dig threw and then try to understand what Yamaha is saying .
Now if he calabrated this and the two channel has the data he should get a pleasant mix in a surround mode but should not be localized or louder than the front stage pretty much background fill on two channel. Iam really wanting to calabrate this for him lol !

Agreed most of my listing is in the -25 to -32 for movies and it’s source dependent streaming apps take a little more juice too .

Yup! Lol. I'd love to be there to sort it out. I'm willing to bet a paycheck it's not anything defective tho. I think the whole comparison with all channel needs to be chucked out the window. Run a proper setup and focus on the surround modes.

-30 is the volume I use most for watching yt or shows. I pop the right Blu Ray or stream a certain movie tho, and I'm cranking it up to -10 and -5 so I can hear it. Then of course 'splosions and music blow me out of the living room... lol.

I would use the same method just to see if all the channel amps are working correctly. Its actually a smart thing to do because you've removed one variable from the equation. It also tells me that some of the DSP is working as well so the next step would be looking at the output configuration of each source device connected to the AVR and the corresponding input configuration of the AVR.

Sure, to make sure it works. Not to judge 5.1.xx (or 7.1 or 9.1) material tho...

I did modify my stance, too. I didn't realize there was no proper setup done with this system. That trumps pretty much everything else, knowing that now.

Thanks again guys. I'll do a little more tweaking with it tonight.

@Mark E. Long what would be a good dB level to set my speakers at manually?

@3db I'll get that information (input map and settings of the input) once I get home from work tonight.

Cheers,

We’ll you need a decent spl meter and the manual test tone built into the avr you measure the distance with a tape but even that will only get you a basic setup with that avr you really need to use the mic and do a full 8 position calibration with angle measurements as ypao does set things in sound fields that you just can’t calculate or really do by ear when your mic comes give me or any of these guys a yell I’ll be glad to walk you threw it it’s very simple really . With your gear and room it will sound very impressive once do right .

Sounds good. The new YPAO microphone should be here by the 20th according to Amazon.

There really isn't a "good" level. It depends on your speaker's sensitivity and how far you sit so the levels can vary. In my room (which is large), at the distance I sit with my current speakers (14.5 feet or 4.4 m), my trim is -1.5 for my mains. When I had the Ultras it was +1.5 because they're not as sensitive. +7 or +8 seems to me (and Mark) is running them pretty hot.

If you haven't run setup at all then all bets are off. I think some units won't work at all right out of the box without running setup, and if you did it for another room before this new one it won't be right either so it's pretty hard to troubleshoot at this point. I know that Audyssey (assuming the same for YPAO) does a very good job with distances and trim levels, even if you don't like the eq'ing, which you can bypass and keep the distance settings.

The 20th for the mic, huh? Wish I had one I could send you!

Thats the best way by far it will set things you just can’t or me either lol and I’ve tried . A little tweaking from there and you’ll be good like I said most of the sound fields are a little overblown and need trimmed back a little .
