When people compare bands, usually nothing good happens. Someone compared Tool to The Mars Volta. There is no comparing bands, there is no accurate way to judge a band. It's all preference. Shadow Parrot doesn't like them, whoop dee doo. Make fun of his tie.

SheepStar
I think Mars Volta and Yes share a closer afinity than does Mars Volta and Tool

I never said I didn't like them. I said that I don't see the comparisons to either Zep or Floyd.

I will say this, however, I've heard Tool for many years, on the radio, on MTV (when they actually played videos) and I liked what I heard but it wasn't enough to make me go buy something by them.

I heard Mars Volta on the Henry Rollins show once and I immediately went out and bought an album by them.

And I like my tie. What's wrong with the Three Stooges?

Mars Volta is an unbelievable band - again I'm going to side with Sheep on this one and say that comparisons are for the birds. Unless you're trying to describe to someone what a band sounds like you may give them indications by offering comparisons, but in the case of Tool, Mars Volta, and quite a bit of Mike Patton's post-Faith No More work for example, they are all so unique and descript in their own respects that comparisons do nothing but undermine their value.

Much of what you hear on the radio from Tool is their mid-90's "hits" if you want to call them that, and IMO, a far cry from their best material. 10,000 days is an epic album start to finish.

I'm a huge Tool fan, and that makes me a perfect circle fan as well.....these guys rock! Anfd they also have the most unique technical, yet musical blends of any band I have ever heard.

Another band that I really have been enjoying lately is Black Tide.

I haven't been able to get to a Tool show yet, but I did see A Perfect Circle and that was an unforgettable show.

I think the reason why they won't be well loved outside of their genre, is they made their own genre. They're not what I would consider metal or rock or alternative. It is for that reason they will never gain mass popularity: art rarely does.

The must have album is definitely Lateralus. 10,000 days is a close second. Aenema and Undertow are closer to alternative metal and less artsy. Depending on who you talk to, you'll usually hear them recommend new tool or old tool. Each album is vastly different from another, so you really can't think of it as all from the same band.
Very well said.

Tool, from the outside in appears to be like some other bands. However, giving the music and artistry a closer listen really shows how talented they really are. Lateralus is my favorite album as it is so detailed and complex. You always hear something new when listening to it.

10,000 days would be 10,000x better if it were remastered to be a bit more dynamic. The mastering is a bit hot and some of the depth and intimacy of the album has been lost there. One does not get the immersed feel that one gets listening to Lateralus.

"Third Eye" is an amazing song and gives an inkling as to what was to come in Lateralus (since it was the last song on Aenima).

Bar none, my favorite band. Danny Carey has no equal in my opinion.

Lateralus is the album that got me hooked on Tool. Its the 1st album I heard from them. I then got undertowm aenemia and 10000 days in that order. I love all albums but Lateralus is my favourite among them. I agree with the idea that they created theri onw genre much like the police when they 1st came out. I know they inflienced A Perfect Circle. I thought they may have influenced I Mother Earth as well but that band also released their debut album the smae year as Tool.

I got hooked on Tool with the song Sober. The album (Undertow) wasn't what I was expecting based on that track, but it grew on me quick.

ISIS is a great band - I got into them a while back, I've been a big fan of the band Neurosis for many years and it kind of led me to them. Pelican is a great one too, along with Cult of Luna. :D

Ah, I guess this is better talked about in the Rock/Metal Headz thread, I forgot this is the Tool thread. Overlap is probably inevitable. :)

Ive listened to Tool since I was about 11 years old. I love metal, and tool has been on my top 5 list for best bands. Though not the most technical, they deffinitly have a unique sound. And of course every band member is a music god in some way, shape, or form. Excellent recordings also. I remember I bought lateralus the first day it came out and was blown away by the SQ.
