FWIW, the CPKCS Holiday Train will be traveling via the Moosehead sub division and stopping at Greenville Jct, Maine this coming Sat, 11/22 to perform. ETA is 1815, Greenville Jct is a 'cam site' on Virtual Railfan.

Excellent vid of B&W photos from the sixties and early seventies of a side by side comparison of the PC and EL. At the 7:29 mark is a pic of the 'Buffalo Day' leaving Harrisburg, Pa, as a young lad I rode that train many times back home to Buffalo, right up to the very end, 4-30-71. 5-1-71 Amtrak began and the train was gone, sad, one of the best daylight cab rides I've ever been on.

I really believe the B&W photography made the whole presentation even more pronounced .........

Bad flooding all over Western Washington state right now.

Skykomish is currently down....

The Skykomish River is at or near record flood stage.

Interesting article, it does 'gloss over' several points of comparison. I like the fuel efficiency one regarding intermodal, imagine if all the current intermodal traffic BNSF handles had to move OTR ? ;)

Seriously, I have no life.
I wonder if location has anything to do with the amount of pollution produced- I saw a train passing over a road, carrying coal- no odor from exhaust, no plume of smoke, less noise than I remember from the past. I didn't stay long enough to see how many cars were being hauled, but they don't usually pull a small number through this area, on their way to the docks or possibly, to Chicago and beyond.

I was a school bus driver in '95-96 and remember this video and another in Illiniois I believe from a driver safety meeting. I remember doing a fill-in route where there's this crossing with multiple tracks. I had to wait till one of the conductors came and turned the signal off. You can't really see sh-t so it was wise to stay put. Back then it was assumed the bus driver in Illiniois was completely at fault but in hindsight I believe the crossings dimensions were fucked up. Though if I was the driver and that happened I move outta state. (Actually the driver did move out of state.) The Fox River Grove incident is 30 years now. I remember my driver trainer during a meeting saying they went to trial a second time to investigate a conductor, but it turned out they had honked their horn well in advance during a crossing. Anyway not the most optimistic thing on trains but my experience way back.

This one gives some visuals. Yeah the driver was at fault, but what a f--ked up intersection to sit a bus on.
