Very interesting. So, in essence you are saying the picture is just better. So, why then does the audio not follow suite?? Or, is it just a matter of dealing with that next in order to bring the audio to the next level so to speak? Thanks for the info.

Not sure what audio coding is on those tracks; didn't read the full link if audio was discussed or not.
Possibly the theater's audio system is not up to the task to reproduce what is on the film tracks? Speaker issues?
I doubt they are THX tested theater

I will check out my local IMAX very soon. More specifically, I will see what speakers are being used as well as observe how it all sounds. Appreciate the info.

Talk to the manager and ask him, see if he knows. Some are behind the screen for sure and may be different?
Ask what kind of audio tracks are on those films, if he knows.

The IMAX here is touted as having 10000 watts of power. That's pretty much all the give you specs wise. You could always wiki it.

Yeah, I could wiki it, but just wanted to see what experiences that some of those here have had with their local IMAX theater. Thanks for mentioning that becuase at time wiki is quite helpful.

Star Wars III had 4 screens at midnight if I remember right.

The same thing is going on here locally. However, there theater surely will be packed. I, on the other hand, plan to go very early Sunday morning when it is not so packed. Gosh, I admit though I can't wait.....LOL!!!!

From reading all the Critics' reviews, I got the impression that "The Dark Knight" is the best movie ever made PERIOD and that it will win Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, etc.

Saw it last night

I saw The Dark Knight last night in a "regular" theater. I noticed no stretching or change in aspect ratio.

As you can see it looks like they crop the picture.

There is a chain of theaters around where I live that were built by the Utah Jazz owner that all have digital projectors and digital sound, so the PQ and SQ were both top notch, always are at those theaters. They also have reserved seating, I don't know why more theaters don't do this, I am happy to pay more so I don't have to wait in line and know I'm going to get a good seat. There are theaters that are a few minutes closer to my house but it isn't worth it to see a movie in a non-digital theater and no reserved seating.

The movie was great, I read a few reviews beforehand and they were all spot on; dark, intense, violent (but no blood), and very good. Acting was top notch, Leger was a stand-out as has been reported.

That is why I don't understand why more theaters don't have reserved seating, everyone I've talked to is willing to pay a small premium for the convince. Seems like a way theaters could increase their revenue, albeit a small increase, but an increase none the less.

Just got back from the IMAX and I must say it lives up to hype and then some. The movie starts out intense and does not slow down. The IMAX screen shrank unless it was an IMAX scene but it wasn't that bad. The bass was a little light compared to the regular theatre but the dynamics were a lot bigger. I will probably be checking it out again on the regular screen to see if it was just the IMAX that was bass light.

All in all it is the best movie so far this year and also the best comic book movie by far. And I got to say that the ending is one of the most perfect endings I have seen in any movie.

I thought the movie was a too long. It definitely had a very dark feel to it. The bass was wow! I do believe there were a few scenes which went too deep for the subs in my theather. This one will rock the home theater on Blu even more so than Iron Man.

I just don't think we needed the secondary plotline (trying to avoid spoilers here) and I think it made the movie about 10 minutes too long. Not that I was bored, I just would have done it differently.

The one thing that is incontrovertible fact is that Heath Ledger was OUTSTANDING. His Joker is among the top 25 character performances I've ever seen.

Regarding the audio- I don't know if it was my theater or what, but I was very disappointed in the bass. Not that there wasn't a lot of it, but it seemed to be coming from up at my face along with the dialogue, and not up through my seat. At times it overwhelmed the soundtrack and the spoken words, and it was also mismatched. I cannot wait for the BD version so I can watch it at home.

The reason why I thought the ending was perfect is because it was open and closed at the same time. If they decide to make another movie that's fine, and if they don't it doesn't matter.

Freaking awesome. I forgot a number of times I was watching a 'superhero' movie. All did a great job. Storyline was great, and kept me involved the entire time. The 2.5 hours went by fast and I left the theater wanting more. I was worried that it wouldn't live up to the hype, but it exceeded my expectations by far. Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen.
