IMAX has a better projector compared to your standard theater. I noticed a difference and I'm an avid movie goer. The sound was a different story. I don't know if it was where I was sitting, or something was broken, but the bass response was completely drowned out.

SheepStar
Thanks Sheep for the info. Might just give the IMAX as try this time. Really been looking forward to seeing this movie for a while now. I will see if the LFE is drowned out or not.

Cheers,

Phil

Not sure Phil. Im afraid it might be worse? (since its "normal" film being really blown up). UNLESS they are using the Imax cameras. I am completely talking out of my butt, a common habit unfortunately. Its been a long time since Ive been in the Imax, which was for a nature documentary, IIRC. Seeing how I never go to movies anymore, it must've been a REALLY long time since Ive been in the IMAX.

I think im going to go for a digital projector, but perhaps not IMAX. :)
Very interesting Jost. I think I am going to check it out to see how I like it. Thanks for the info just the same.

Cheers,

Phil

I saw Superman Returns in I-Max/3D as well as later on BD on my home system... my take is that it looked awesome in the theater but it sounded much better at home. I don't know if it's commonplace, but I had a similar experience to Sheep where I was just totally underwhelmed by the sound. It could be that they hope to use the larger picture to amaze the audience, so they put less effort into the acoustics.
Seems logical. Great picture but less emphasis on the sound. Thanks for the info as it is always appreciated.

Phil

The IMAX where I am uses Bose so that might explain the sound if all their theaters use it. But the visual is much better than the regular movies.

Bose-are you serious? I thought most of the IMAX theaters use Ascend Acoustics speakers. Guess, I was wrong. Or, do some of them use something different than Bose or Ascend?

Most newer IMAX films are now using the IMAX digital sound DDP designed by Sonics. DDP is short for Digital Disc Playback. The system is a digital sound source specifically made for IMAX.

Ok great. Thanks for the info. Do you know what speakers are used in the IMAX theaters? Or, perhaps the speakers that are the most common nationwide?? Just curious is all. I thought I read that they were using Ascend Acoustics speakers.

IMAX uses clusters of speakers. Each channel consist of JBL speakers model 2404 H tweeter, 2445 J driver, 2123 H midrange and 2245 H woofer.

Thanks for the info once again. I don't know where I read that about the Ascends. Oh well I can't remember. Appreciate the help.

Thanks jost for the info. So, you are basically saying IMAX has a better picture???

Cheers,

Phil
Here you go. :D
Scroll down to the technical part. While it uses 70mm film type, it is sideways and has a much larger image area than the standard 70mm film.

The IMAX I went toi uses only a single subwoofer right in the center of the screen (they show you all the speakers before the movie). It looks big, and the theater was that small, but the bass sucked. I saw 300 there BTW.

Very interesting. So, in essence you are saying the picture is just better. So, why then does the audio not follow suite?? Or, is it just a matter of dealing with that next in order to bring the audio to the next level so to speak? Thanks for the info.

Phil

I hope I am wrong on this, but why redo the Joker when Jack Nicholson already did a great job back in the early 90s?

I want a Justice League Movie!
My local IMAX (Space and Rocket Center) is very much different than the IMAX theater at the Mall of Georgia. The local one has a more enveloping screen; seems to be dome shaped. This made me nauseated, big time! I'll never see another movie there.

I got tickets for VIP seating at a Friday matinee (3:15). What usually costs $14 at night will only cost me $10. Best part is that the VIP section serves alcohol; I don't drink but that means that no little kids will be up there. :)

It's definitely Bose where I am as they advertise its use all the way into the theater. I'm actually going to see it in a regular theater now as the IMAX is completely sold out for a while.

I heard from someone that they should have given The Dark Knight the "R" rating because it is very intense, instead of PG-13?

Bring it on!!!

Finally I serious movie, not some goofy comic book movie.:D

Amen to that. I saw the extended preview last time I was at IMAX and the whole time I was thinking to myself what a dark and creepy movie. Then I found out it was the new Batman movie!

I'll try to take some pics of speakers at my IMAX with my wife's iphone to see what kinda stuff they got. My IMAX also shows Real 3-D movies so I have no idea what kinda setup you need for that.
