The Dark Knight comes out this Friday and I plan to see it Saturday night at the IMAX. I just thought I'd get the thread going as I'm sure there's a lot of anticipation.

WOW, that I max should be something. Wish the IMAX near me would show regular movies:D

Is the I-Max really that much better? I guess it is in 3-D right? Never been ,but no time like the present I always say.

Not sure if its 3-D (though I heard Beowulf in 3D was amazing. My friend said he ducked!), but I read that Nolan used IMAX cameras for 6 major action sequences. I took the impression from the article that this is a rarity...

IMAX has a better projector compared to your standard theater. I noticed a difference and I'm an avid movie goer. The sound was a different story. I don't know if it was where I was sitting, or something was broken, but the bass response was completely drowned out.

Not sure Phil. Im afraid it might be worse? (since its "normal" film being really blown up). UNLESS they are using the Imax cameras. I am completely talking out of my butt, a common habit unfortunately. Its been a long time since Ive been in the Imax, which was for a nature documentary, IIRC. Seeing how I never go to movies anymore, it must've been a REALLY long time since Ive been in the IMAX.

I think im going to go for a digital projector, but perhaps not IMAX. :)

I saw Superman Returns in I-Max/3D as well as later on BD on my home system... my take is that it looked awesome in the theater but it sounded much better at home. I don't know if it's commonplace, but I had a similar experience to Sheep where I was just totally underwhelmed by the sound. It could be that they hope to use the larger picture to amaze the audience, so they put less effort into the acoustics.

A traditional movie camera shoots at a resolution of 2000-4000 pixels across while IMAX cameras shoot at 8000 pixels. There were 5 scenes in the movie completely shot with IMAX cameras. Now since these scenes were shot natively with IMAX, to show in regular theatres they had to convert the video. So if you go to a regular movie theatre you will be able to tell between an IMAX scene and regular when the aspect ratio shrinks vertically on the screen. Regular shots will fill the whole movie screen while IMAX will be smaller vertically.

This month's Wired has an interview with Chris Nolan and he tells how hard it was to shoot with IMAX because of the weight of the cameras and the fact that a full reel can only shoot minutes of video before needing to be swapped out.

ps I just watched 2/3 of Batman Gotham Knight animation last night. Pretty cool, will finish it tonight. Another gift set from my friend. He's given me so many, but this last batch was still half HD-DVD's (u-571 & the thing). A replacement HD-A35 is like $600 on amazon... :eek: I guess I can't complain. :p

The people that have already seen in it regular theatres say that the IMAX shoots are smaller vertically on the screen. Apparently when you watch in IMAX, the movie will fill the entire IMAX screen no matter what kind of shot it is. This won't be the case for regular theatre and you will see the aspect ratio change throughout the movie.

I bought my IMAX tickets two weeks ago and already the 12am and 3am shows were sold out. My IMAX theatre is apparently going to be showing it 24/7 for the first weekend.
 
Thanks for the reply. Hmm, tough call then. Changing aspect, or inferior PQ for the greater portion of the film (depending on viewing angle).

My friend who bought me the Batman animation says that DK already sold $2 million in IMAX pre-sales. Wow.

what to do, what to do. I'll just follow my friends. :D
 
I hope I am wrong on this, but why redo the Joker when Jack Nicholson already did a great job back in the early 90s?

I want a Justice League Movie!

I don't think the screen will shrink in size during the movie. Rather, they will need to use either compression or stretch the picture so it stays the same.

The Tim Burton joker was a campy silver age version of the joker. Nolan Joker is modern, "The Killing Joke" version. You really can't compare the two because they are from two very different eras. It's like comparing silver age Batman to modern age Batman, can't be done.

Some reviewers at rotten tomatoes have already stated that the movie shrinks during the IMAX scenes.

True but my favorite Joker is still Mark Hamill in the cartoon from the late 90s. :)
